I am looking to buy a good fleece for late fall/winter aerobic endeavors. I will likely be wearing an Underarmor baselayer beneath it. I was wondering what the different pros/cons of Hi-loft fleece like this vs a stretch fleece like this. Thanks!
On that rei outlet page, check out the R2 Patagonia. Only like $53. If you can wear XL, and don't mind the color, it's a really good deal. I have the same version and think its great. Soft and warm. Can't imagine a fleece being more comfortable. The stretch ones might provide a little more wind protection, can't really say.
In general, high-loft fleece is meant to provide warmth above all other design elements. So if you're sitting still, or climbing in Antarctica, that's the jacket for you. If you're not expecting extreme cold, the mid-weight stretch fleece is the better option. I would consistently wear a patagonia capilene 4 top in lieu of a mid-weight fleece in all but the coldest conditions because I tend to be a very sweaty guy. Its less bulky, is more breathable, and provides more flexibility in your layering schema by allowing you both the room and the capability gap to add another layer if you need it. An R2, or that EMS top, is gonna be the better option for your uses, I think.
