I'm considering UC Davis for college as it is strong in the major I seek. My question is there any non bouldering going on close I know there's indoor but I need some rock too.

Generally speaking I would say that there aren't a lot of quality options real close, but if you are willing to drive 1-1.5 hours to get up into the Tahoe area, then you have a plethora of great mainly trad climbing areas to choose from.

I just moved to Sac, and I live about 20 min from Davis. I don't know the area super well yet, but look up the following on MP. Click on the map, and get directions from Davis. The times, of course, will not reflect heavy traffic times, so don't plan on driving out Friday afternoon: Auburn quarry (I think the closest real roped climbing to Davis) Sugarloaf Phantom Spires Cosumnes River Gorge (~same distance from Davis as AQ?) Lover's Leap Donner Pass Sonora Pass (a bit further) Yosemite (further still, but still doable) There are some threads in the N. Cal. forum about climbing near Sac. They'll give you a good indication how far things are from Davis as they're not far apart. Hopefully you'll get some more/better info from someone who has been in the area longer than myself.

Mt. Saint Helena is an hour and a half (less if you drive like me) southwest, for a winter climbing fix.

Nut tree boulders are actually pretty dam fun, all sorts of grades, Tahoe is amazing, 2 hrs max, can take Yosemite trips and the gym rocknasium is pretty cool has a great community there, little further 5-6 hrs can get you to bishop and eastern Sierra not bad at all

Good recommendations above. Also its noteworthy that Auburn quarry (closest area) is being further developed and is going to be open 7 days a week this April (not just weekends and holidays anymore). Lots of sport climbing development in Emeralds/Bowman Lake area which is an hour or so from Davis (maybe another 20-30 minutes up the 80 past Auburn). So within an hour or so there is a decent amount of good stuff, within 2.5 hours there is a TON of climbing, sport, trad and bouldering (though I know you said you weren't really into that). Within 4-5 hour driving radius you have world class climbing (Think Bishop, Yosemite, all of the high Sierra, etc.). Rocknasium is a nice gym, tho a little small the routes are typically of good quality.

Tons of great climbing within 1.5 hours, and rocknasium gym is a great community of climbers who get out every weekend they can.
