Ankle support for climbing/mountaineering

I have had chronic ankle sprains for years and MRI finally showed that I have ruptured 2 out of three lateral ligaments in my left ankle. Im going to take care of the medical side but I was wondering if people have found a good solution for ankle support with their rock shoes and under their mountaineering or hiking boots. I have worn a brace under my boots but it gets severely uncomfortable after a few hours and the thought of doing real mileage with it on is unappealing. So if anybody has figured that one out please share!

Order this book from Amazon:

It details all of the tape jobs. Taping is kind of a hassle, but it works wonders. I was taping my plantar fascitis from what I learned from the book. I finally went to the Podiarist and when they saw my tape job they said"Oh, you have been to another Podiatrist.".

They removed the tape, and when they were done with the examinaton, they put the same tape job on and charged me an extra $25 for the tape job (I didn't have insurane).

If taping helps, you might look into orthotics.

I have been wearing a ASO brace for 6 months after a bad ankle sprain while trail running. I run wearing it, and climb in it. It fits well in my climbing shoes.

After a really bad sprain been using a McDavid X brace for about a year and really like it. Excellent support agains rolling but you can still point your toe without the brave getting in the way.

For mountaineering boots when it's been really bad tape job is definitely the way to go - just be sure to use a drying agent or tincture of benzine.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
