Hey guys, I'll be coming out next week for a week and was looking for two things. One is that i'll be out from sunday- saturday and will be looking for a partner to climb some routes. Second is that i'm trying to find free camping near truckee/soda springs area. I know here in utah you can camp in most canyons as long as your a 1/2 mile from the road. Does any one know anything like that in the area!? Thanks a ton guys!

You could probably pull it off at Indian Springs for tent camping. For in car camping there are a few lots near Sugarbowl that work. A little searching here on the site or TGR will yield all the info you need.

I would second the Indian Springs area. Plenty of potential places, probably no one around and a few degrees warmer than camping on the summit, which has plenty of people around on the weekends. (And you can camp practically at the base of the climbing there) You'll have no problems finding a stealth campsite.

My 2 sense, if i may. Just spoke w/friend who lives in Truckee, they have 3' of snow on the ground, rock is wet and white. And more on the way. Not sure if you have other info than that? Might want to call a local sports/rock retailer, they might have info for you? If this is not in you plans, try the valley, or Bishop, both look good. As to your question, there is good camping North on 89, go a few (5?) miles out of town, on the right you will see a 'picnic' area sign, directly across the road from this sign is a pullout, and a road which looks like it has a sign saying "No Cars" Look a little closer, in fine print it says advised. Tricky sign, but i have driven my Toyota Corolla (low clearance) up here to camp. Free, easy, cool. Take the first right if you are in a car, easier clearances, left is farther from the road noise. If you go south on 89 you can camp at "the Garbage Boulders" You need to go to local climbing shop and get directions. Cool place to hang, and a boulder w/6 problems, V2-V6. WHich yo ucan protect w/ toprope, too.
