How much time off after a pulled Latissimus or Teres major muscle?

It seems like I have injured (pulled/torn) my Teres major muscle (one of the muscles in the armpit) during a campus throw on a route. During the move I felt sharp pain, the area around the deltoid muscle visibly swelled up and next morning, a haematoma appeared under the arm. Range of motion appears unaffected and the pain is not in the shoulder joint proper, so I am not worried about this being a rotator cuff problem esp. since it was a down-pull motion injury. I am doing the usual RICE thing (rest, ice, compression and elevation) and going to stay off climbing for a while. Has anyone had this problem? What has been the average time to recover?

I am currently dealing with the same thing. I haven't stopped climbing yet so I don't know the answer..... hah, maybe you can let me know!

Well, I am going to see a PT next and bought myself a supportive brace (sh*t, shoulder brace is $60!). On the bright side, I will have some time to do aerobic training and learn how to aid-climb :(

This thread was from a while ago, so I hope you guys are recovering well already.

I am 1 year out from a strained trees major (combined with small labrum tear and strained lat). It was incredibly painful to pull down in specific directions, and almost no pain if I pulled down from other angles.

After a few aborted recovery attempts, I took 2 months off. I am still recovering now. It's a long road!

Brian Lau at "Therapeutic Inspirations" (cheesy name, near grand central) helped me understand the injury and reinforced the importance of patience.

Stability exercises have been really important for me --- scapula, lower back, focusing on holding the shoulder in the right position before making a big move. Oh, and not doing any more campusing on hard routes.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
