I'm sure this is in the forum somewhere but cannot find it, i have never been to bishop before and am wondering what van camping is like, do i have to go to the pit or other sites or can i just park on the side of the road for the night or other places? cheers - stu
Plenty of places right out of town for some low-key van camping.

The Pit is relatively close to town and cragging, inexpensive, and no one will hassle you there. What's not to like?
My friend Rachel slept in the backseat of her 4-door honda in the Von's parking lot (with her chihuahua even) while spending an entire winter in Bishop. So your options are limited by your budget and imagination.
if you're bouldering, you can bring enough food/water and camping near buttermilks area with a long time without anyone bothering you. I have a friend that spent 2 weeks near a creek/cattle gaurd there without issues.
I'd head down by Keough Hot Springs south of town. The hot spring releases their hot water every night and it flows down into a series of pools and tubs you can relax in .
I camp out there in my truck but there are lots of DWP signs telling you not to overnight it ...
Just drive out the 5 bridges road like you were going to the happys. At the four way intersection where you would go left to the happys simply go straight and up the casa diablo road. Lots of camping possibilities up there and it'll be warmer than the buttermilks. Plenty of camping in other locations, but that would be the closest to town.
Another nice spot would be up the Silver Canyon Road as you go through the little hamlet of Laws.
If you want a more secluded spot or something more scenic just keep driving farther out from town, the land is predominantly public out there.
