Deaf Smith climbing

Anyone know any info about climbing up in deaf smith canyon? |
|
few and far between but a good hike. I once almost put my hand down on a baby rattler on a ledge about 5' off the ground there. that was after hiking through 50 yards of nettle. never brought a rope but there are a couple of bolts I saw |

Tony Calderone put out a supplement a while back. |

I believe Deaf Smith was removed from MP.com due to access problems. I did go up there once and question if there could/should be an easement across the private property at the mouth but do not know? As I understand it, the property owner is very much of the opinion that there is no easement. However, I'm doubtful the private properties were there before people were hiking the canyon. All that said if you do go up there expect to be greeted unfriendly and possibly a visit from the cops when you exit. |

Zoso isn't the approach to the hounds tooth only through ferguson canyon? |
|
Probably. I haven't ever done it. I just copied/pasted stuff. |

Last I heard he had changed and was being really chill and cool, and personally I think the guy deserves a second chance. |

I used to run up Deaf Smith's daily and never had an issue, you just have to know where to enter the canyon without pissing the land owners off. Also there are many routes throughout the lower portions of the Canyon if you know where to look. Several locals have been developing the area for years without letting the general public in on the secret. If you're up for an adventure poke around some of the obvious cliff bands and see if you can find bolts..........I think you'd be surprised at what you might find. |

I wouldn't bother , TONS of rattlers, crappy access |

The climbing up there is great even if it is a bit of a approach. There are even a couple rare limestone deposit climbing walls if you know were to look. All the bolts have been tightened or replaced within the last couple months so get up there. There are routes up the right fork after the first mine shaft by the first campfire pit you'll see on the left(if your facing east)also if you continue going up the trail at the 2nd river crossing all the walls in the surrounding area on the left side of the canyon have bolted routes. Keep a sharp eye out and you'll probably find more. Also if you hike up the left side of the canyon the farther up you go the more cliffs you'll find great for trad or free soloing. Imagine Ferguson canyon except with quart-site walls and a jerk bag guarding the entrance. Sneak in by hiking up the mountain a little on the left side. If he catches you on the way out say you didn't know it was private property until it was to late because you hiked in from the top of fergy and got lost. Its worked for me twice. Also if you don't like people smoking pot or the smell I wouldn't go there its a haven of sorts. Party on and check out the left side too. Its awesome but no Indian ruins despite what you might here or google. |

WHAT??? |

I was about to post a new topic but saw this thread already started. I went up trying to access Deaf Smith today not knowing the whole access issue, just wanting to hike up there to check it out. Right off of Kings Hill Dr to the east is the private road as discussed on the summitpost approach. There are big painted words on the driveway saying "no hiking access" with about 7 signs saying private property, no trespassing etc. I was stopped almost immediately by the man who lives on the corner asking if i was heading up hiking. I cordially asked him about the trailhead and he proceeded to tell me a huge long story about "the war of deaf smith canyon". I never made it up the road. |

There is probably a mix of truth and BS in what you were told. I have no doubt that some unsavory folks spoiled access with their antics. I am not sure what easement the property owner may have - he might have been able to get a previous easement extinguished but I doubt he establish one to prevent access unless other property owners are involved. |

Access from Golden Oak Dr (park down the street) and either take a deer trail or take the "dog walking" trail breaking away before reaching Golden Hills Canyon Rd |
|
from maps.slco.org/website/asses… The two large parcels north of Golden Hills Canyon Rd, as well as the five smaller ones along the road next to public lands, are owned by American Healthcare, Inc. The two large parcels to the south are owned by Church of the Will of God. Both sound like tax shelters to me. As to any easements, if there are any formally recorded, you should be able to view them at the county recorder's office if you have the parcel numbers in hand, which the above parcel viewer will give you. Typically though, an easement would not apply to the general public, but to a specific access requirement such as a utility. You're really looking at establishing a public right of way as Allen described. |

This spring I hiked up Heugh's Canyon a few times and found it to be amazing and quiet. More crappy rock up there than you can shake a stick at. This canyon taught me that there are 7 Circles of Bushwhacking Hell. |
|
I used your map link and sorta can see but I'm not sure what to look for on property ownership or easement? |
|
Agreed- Heughes is a great little Foothill gem (...but not for the climbing...)- I've had similar troubles which seem to have increased over the years. I've tried three different access spots and always been yelled at. Maybe I should stop wearing my fluorescent shorts. My last time in I saw a group approaching from the slopes to the north- presumably from the Boulevard- avoiding the houses. Maybe that's the trick? |
