Does anyone know of any good camping options near Rock Springs, WY?

We're traveling from Boulder to Big Sandy trailhead, which looks like ~8 hours, so we'd like to drive about 6 hours, which puts us near Rock Springs, WY, sleep and then finish the drive in the morning.

It doesn't have to be a campground, but at least somewhere legal and not next to a roaring highway.

just continue on from rock springs.
once you hit the 50mile dirt road anywhere is
probably fine. the farther you go in, the more
campers you will see.

if i remember correctly, from rock springs, it is
2 hours to the trailhead proper.

also, the dirt road is in the best shape i have ever
seen it in this year. (been going the last 7 years or so..)

hope this helps!

ps: good brew pub/food in rock springs. i forget what street,
but it is kind of like a mountain sun!

Thanks for the idea. So I guess the land surrounding the dirt road is BLM? I suppose I could also check for BLM land closer to Rock Springs.

Thanks for the food tip.

There's a perfectly good campground at the trailhead, much more pleasant than anything you're likely to find near Rock Springs.

yeah, we might end up doing that, but breaking up the drive sounded better than doing 8 hours straight and navigating the dirt roads in the dark for the first time.

Big Sandy Resevoir is an option. You can drive into it strait from 191 and with very little backtracking get over to the Elkhorn Rd.

I would imagine any good out of the way campsite near Rock Springs will have a meth lab trailer on it.

I sleep in the wal-mart parking lot in Rock Springs. It's free, close to highway, and a good stopping point from Denver. Of course you'd have to sleep in your car.

Just keep going to the campground at Big Sandy Opening. Rock Springs is a shit hole...it is literally the meth capital of the West.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
