There is free camping just across the street from the South Side parking area. While it's not an established campground, the area gets plenty of use. There are several cleared, flat areas for a tent. Plenty of water in the area too. You'll be in Pisgah, where you can camp anywhere in the forest for free. I think the only rule is that you have to camp 200 feet from the road or something like that. It's gorgeous out there. Enjoy it.

The spot at the nose is kinda iffy. The good news is that their are plenty of places along the Foresst service road to camp. Also you can fill up water cans at the ranger station on the way in. If you need a shower one can be found at the davidson river campground pretty cheap.

Almost all gravel roads in Pisgah have camping...Avery Creek rd, Davidson River rd, Headwaters rd, & Yellow Branch rd are all good places to find a campsite if the camping at the various climbing areas is already taken.

Let me be clear in case someone makes this mistake. DO NOT CAMP in the spot that is directly across from the nose. That is Parking and not camping. Somone took down the forest service No Camping sign earlier this season. But if you walk back from that site 5 minutes you'll find the appropriate camp sites.

If you want a specific backup that is safe if you get in late and need something most likely open, go a little ways past the north side pulloff and take the 1st left and there is a good site up a little ways on the left at the corner of another gated forest road.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
