Should I move to Denver?

I just moved to Bishop to do a loooow paying internship. I absolutely love it here, but it looks like I might be getting a job offer in Denver doing a job that I would enjoy, but Denver???

Is denver nothing but urban sprawl and rows and rows of strip malls full of people that think they are outdoorsy or chubby housewives??? I have a shitload of school loans, but you don't have to pay those if you don't make enough money (although interest is adding up fast!).

When I lived in Utah we always made fun of the Rad-o's, is it that bad there???

If I do decide to take the job (if they offer it up), what area's should I look at moving to? We'll want a 2 BR for less than $1,200 per month, close enough to downtown that I'm not spending half my day in F^CKING traffic, good food within walking distance, and it would be nice to have a climbing gym nearby for the 3 nights a week I'll be climbing during winter (and I guess after work in the summer, GODDAMM I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE BISHOP!!!!!!!!!!!!).

sounds like you should stay where you are.

I'm with Mardi...if you're that attached to Bishop (and believe me, I understand why!), then stay. Figure out a way to make it work and stay. Blow your youth climbing that epic granite...and worry about the loans on your 30th birthday.

You're under 30, right?

If you do, however, have to move to a shitty...then Denver's wayyyy better than almost every other big city, in terms of climbing/skiing/wilderness.....

Tough one, bud. Good luck...RC

I just sound like a 20 year old spoiled brat, I'm actually 33, I wasted my 20's in the air force, school, peace corps and more school!

Agreed. Denver is way better than, say Dallas or even Phoenix for that matter. Denver can be a cool place. Lots of people are (or call) themselves "outdoorsy" but its for good reason. There are cool outdoors things very close by, especially climbing. Sometimes the access to the high country might even be closer than Bishop. It aint the small town of Bishop, but it also aint Houston. All depends on your debt and job situation i guess.

Denver is cool. In fact, it's one of the top hipster towns in the U.S. according to some place. If you live in an older part of town it's downright trendy and affordable at the same time. Avoid living in certain places, have a good car, and escape on the weekends. You got it.

Hey, I live in minnesota. It blows dogs for quarters!! flat everywhere. I have the same debate, but in my case it should be easier. Good Luck!!!!

Denver is cool... it's really grown on me in the past 7 years I've been in Colorado... it's affordable for a city, friendly/easy to get to know people, has great culture/diversity/arts scene, unlike Boulder which is mostly a lot of talk and also super expensive... obviously Denver is still close to a lot of good climbing.. South Platte, North Table/Clear Creek in Golden, Shelf is not too far, as well as all the Boulder crags... if I could do it over again I think I would have lived in Denver instead of Boulder; climbing access/quality is honestly just as good in many way... but, I'm moving to Sweden in a month. So yah, it might not be the Eastside of the Sierra, but Denver is pretty cool!

Can I have your job in Bishop?

At the age of 25 I moved to Denver and almost immediately started making arrangements to move back to Utah. Having lived most of my life in Utah, spending some extended time in Bishop, and living 1 year in Denver, I'd suggest serious consideration.

Here is my analogy: Denver is the REI of many other places to live.

Denver certainly isn't nothing but urban sprawl, though there is an awful lot of it once you get away from the urban core. Downtown and the historic neighborhoods surrounding it are great. Finding walkable neighborhoods in that price range near downtown won't be a big deal at all - look in to Highlands, Baker, Capitol Hill, Wash Park and whatever the neighborhood is called immediately east of downtown. Downtown really needs a climbing gym - the good ones are in the suburbs up north or south, or out in Boulder.

You might also consider Golden, which has more of a college/small town feel and year round climbing in town. The light rail line from Golden to downtown should be complete next year - I loved commuting on the light rail between downtown and the tech center. If the Golden light rail line had been operational when I was in Denver, that is where I would have lived.

I've moved back and forth between Utah and Colorado a couple of times now. I prefer Utah and i'm back here for good, but the Utahrd Colorado bashing is really stupid. It would do some people good to get out more. The climbing is great, the city life is much better than Utah, and the skiing sucks - I found it more convenient to take a cheap flight to SLC for the weekend and ski good snow with no crowds rather than deal with the I70 tourist shitshow. The nearby whitewater is also awfully good if you are in to kayaking at all.

Denver's not a bad place at all , I've lived in alot worse places in my 50 yrs
My best advice is stay off 25 between 7-9 am and 2:30- 7 pm n you'll do fine.

I lived in Reno a few years n played all over the Sierra . I like Colorado .

Yep, nothing to see or do here, move along. -walks away whistling-

Doesn't have more world-class athletes in every outdoor discipline than pretty much any other metro area, mostly flat, horrible weather, no world-class climbing or bouldering, rock quality sucks everywhere, no high mountains nearby, horrible food, traffic so bad you have to turn around and head back to work as soon as you get home

Seriously, if you genuinely want advice from locals, it might help to not start your post with: "the place you live sucks, should I move there?"

Man that;s a tough one...

Reminds me of back in the mid 90's when I was working at a shit job in so cal. One day I was bitching and moaning about of so cal sucks for this reason or that and the older wiser dude i was working with says,"It's not where you are it's who you are". True.

Bishop or Denver? Man, I'm in Fort Collins (moving to vancouver, ca in june) and if I had a gig in Bishop I'd most likely take it and make it work. It's a life long dream to spend as much time as poss. in the range of light....

My wife just saw your thread question..."the answer it no, tell him no!".

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
