I will be headed to the gunks in a few short weeks hopefully, and I am looking to just stay in my car. Any place that allows overnight parking? Thanks!

There is a campsite just down the mountain from the climbing area, you could sleep in your car, or a tent.

there is a quiet place about 7 miles up the road north of New Paltz, private campground with shower and bathroom. Forget the name, but it's near Rosendale. Think it was maybe 20 bucks per tent.

You can but it should be noted (publicly) that the mohonk preserve does not officially allow this and you could be asked to leave (and should comply if asked to do so). My experience is that they are very lenient regarding this rule. In most cases, from my understanding (maybe Mike can verify this), no one really has any business to be in the preserve after dark. I think they even say to leave after dark. There's definitely plenty of no camping signs in the parking areas.

Ruined by idiots who treat everywhere they stay as if it was their own priate backyard. So now you will be asked to leave at best and ticketed at worst. If you really need to camp on the cheap there are two overnight parking lots in New Paltz. You can pull in and keep a low profile and will probably only have a flashlight shined in your face once per night by the local police. If you bust out the cooler, radio and camp stove you'll get grief from them as well. Btw, the campground mentioned above is quiet and pretty clean.
