Kids Climbing Helmet Advice Please?
|
I am looking to get my 3.5 year old a new helmet, but I see a lot of them out there and would like any advice from someone who may have already gone through the process please? |

I know sizes are tough to find for small kids....and have seen several climbers use their bike helmets for those younger years. Depends on how much climbing and falling you figure your little one to be doing. Have seen some pretty safe results from those only in a bike helmet, but do try to find a kids small one if possible. I"ve seen the Mammut and Camp ones, and they seem reasonable in price too. |

FWIW, we used bike helmets until our 3 got to be in the 6-10 range. In that lower end, when they started to go up multipitch routes, they used smaller Ecrin Rocs or the smaller Elios. When they are really small, they wind up generally climbing fairly tame routes (picked by us, of course), so high-end helmets seemed like barely much better than bike helmets. |

The Picchu adjusts down to fit my little guy (~18 mos); It is rated for climbing & biking & has clips for a headlamp. Even if the shell seems too big, the suspension should snug it to fit & stay in place. |

Be careful with bike helmets, as they often have holes in top that could potentially let small rocks fall right through. Climbing helmets are primarily to protect from falling objects, whereas bike helmets are designed to protect from high speed crashes with the ground. |

Picchu for my kiddos |

Josh Knieff wrote: That's the reason why I prefer a bike helmet to a climbing helmet. Look at the statistics in Accidents in North American Climbing: most serious head injuries come from the climber falling, not from falling objects. In that scenario, the bike helmet is the clear winner since it is designed and tested for these impacts to a much higher standard. |

Picchu for our kids as well. Fits great and rated for climbing a biking. They wear it climbing, biking, scooters, and the 3 year old skis in it. Makes packing easier for camping trips as well with only having to bring 1 helmet for each kiddo. |

Edelrid Kid's Shield. It is also rated for Climbing and Biking :) |

Another vote for the Picchu. |
