Hey Folks,

I am trapped in Houston for a bit and am seeking out fun and interesting things to do OUTSIDE. If you have suggestions for things to do in and around Houston please let me know; activities do not necessarily have to be climbing related.

peace and thanks

Drive West! Austin has tons of limestone and Enchanted Rock is only 5 hours away...

Corey,
you are effed for outside stuff, you know that homie. I'd suggest finding the nearest hot yoga studio and at least peeping the local talent in tight wet pants. You can ride your bike home.

Well, now...there's always beautiful Galveston or Surfside. Where else can one bask in the sweltering heat of south Texas/Louisiana and take in the scenic drilling rig or production platform and brown water of the Gulf of Mexico.

Having spent time in the gulf and travelling through Beaumont, Galveston, Surfside, and Port Aransas, I would typically drink as much as I could when I came ashore. At least there's booze...

Good luck and have fun! Houston is a wonderful town.

Hi Corey,

Welcome to flatland.

For indoor climbing activities...

1. Centrally located: Texas Rock Gym ( texasrockgym.com/) I'm a part-time setter there
2. Far northwest: Stone Moves ( stonemoves.com/default.cfm)
3. Far southeast: Space City ( spacecityrockclimbing.com/)
4. Other assorted "private" walls (i.e. universities, private gyms, etc.)

For Outdoor climbing activities...

1. Austin Greenbelt (in Austin)
2. Reimers Ranch (just west of Austin)
3. Enchanted Rock (west of Austin, ~5hrs from Houston)

For non-climbing Houston activities:

1. Mountain biking in Memorial Park and other places around town. Lots of running trails too.
2. Galveston (beach-type stuff)
3. Brazos Bend State Park (~45 minutes south) for hiking, gators, etc.
4. Multiple Wildlife Refuges along the coast both north and south of Galveston.
5. Sam Houston forrest (~1 hour north) for hiking, camping etc.

Sorry, but Houston is just not an "outside" kind of town so good luck finding whatever makes you happy.

Okay, next three days could be filled with museums, restaurants, and more inside time.

Thanks for the help!
