I am trying to plan a trip for (roughly) December 7 - 17. I was hoping to bag some big stuff in Zion. What is the weather like that time of year down there? Would it make more sense to head to Indian Creek instead? Thanks!
I'd say if you have your own vehicle head to Zion. That way you have great accessibility in case the weather isn't up to snuff, and you can rally down to Red Rocks in search of warmer temps.
IC is at a higher elevation but has much more southern exposure. I cheery pick days at Zion all winter...but to make it a committed destination in Dec is a bit risky. Flexibility during the winter is key to getting some good climbing in. Wet sandstone does not work. That being said, we climbed Sunlight Buttress this past January, which is Charlie Fowler's contribution to "50 Favorite Climbs in North America". I mention that because this is the highest elevation climb (of significant climbs) in Zion National Park. So any given day offers up an opportunity if the sun is out and it is dry. Good luck!
