I was planning on climbing in the Gunks this weekend and noticed while the weather is fine Friday through Sunday it's raining until then. Does anyone know how long the Rock take to dry out there? Would i lose a day or would the whole weekend be a bust? I spent about 5 hours driving to New Hampshire to find a granite soaked water slide in the white mountains this weekend and I'd rather not repeat that. Thanks.

The Gunks will dry really quickly, usually a few hours, if the weather is nice.

Also keep in mind that the upper pitches (i.e. above the trees) that get exposed to wind/sun will dry quicker. If things are damp down low you may want to look for some pitches from the GT ledge and climb an easier pitch to get up there.

Climbed last Saturday under bluebird and perfect weather. It hadn't rained since Thursday according to the forecast (not a local). The uberfall was still running pretty strong and the deep cracks inside corners were wet. The second pitch of Three Pines was really wet and sloppy inside the crack, but totally climbable using face moves. No issues other than that.

Keep an eye on the weather till the weekend, it's been pretty erratic. Two weekends ago it was supposed to be a clear, sunny day with like 10% chance of rain and I got caught in hail at the Gunks. Looks like this Saturday isn't looking so good up there right now. However, they're having their annual Guides Olympics this Friday (more over on gunks.com), so I bet it'll be a blast. I wouldn't be surprised if you find some costumed climbers too for Halloween. The Uberfall tends to be wettest, and some climbs like Three Pines or Hawk take longer to dry, but you'll find enough stuff that's pretty dry. Have a great weekend!

It's been so wet this year, there are still seeps both high and low on some routes, even days after the last rain. Most are small, but keep an eye out. I'm not sure the cliff has been bone dry yet this year. On the flip side, it might be a good ice season this winter. :^D

I generally find something climbable unless it is actually raining. Arrow wall and Madame G are good bets. Last soggy weekend, my hubby and I ended up with Arrow wall all to ourselves practically the whole day. We took the easy, though soggy, first pitch on Arrow then had all those lovely dry 2nd pitches to run laps on.

Is it still semi-popular to converge on The Sting and attempt to run laps on it when it rains? There might be a handful of other rainy day climbs at The Gunks.
