Do dynamic ropes always have 3+ colors?

Many years ago I was told that the sheaths of static ropes will have only 1 or 2 colors, whereas dynamic ropes will always have sheaths with 3 or more colors.

Can anyone verify if this is actually true? Or is this just a myth / generality?

I'm looking at the edelweiss performance right now and it only has two colors. I think you can get the beal joker in black too.

From the UIAA site, the UIAA 107 standard for low-stretch ropes requires the sheath to have one main color that covers at least 80 % of the surface. Spiraling threads may use at most two colors and may spiral in one direction only.

there are several dynamic ropes that are single color. the beal joker is one. it comes in black, and i think i have seen yellow also.

interesting info brenta, i didn't know that.

funny. this came up a couple days ago in RMNP. a guy approached me after our climb and told me i shouldn't be climbing on my fusion nano because it's only one color and therefore not a climbing rope.

i'm kind of not a big fan of the single color dynamic ropes for that reason. best just to keep things simple and let static ropes be a single color and dynamic ropes multiple colors.

Yea my nanos are all one color. Well the yellow one is two now, brown and yellow. Haha.

I believe Beal used black for the 50 m non-GoldenDry Joker. Maybe they still do. I know I've climbed on two distinct black Jokers and they were both 50 m and non-GoldenDry.

I seem to recall that the color schemes of dynamic ropes is also subject to some restrictions, but I don't remember the details and I was unable to find a reliable source in my quick search. In any case, as many have already pointed out, a dynamic rope may be all one color.

I have a Sterling Marathon 10.4 in that's jet black only.

So the answer is no. :)

I saw some kids climbing on a completely black rope in CCC once. I almost suggested that they shouldn't be leading on a static rope, but now I'm glad I didn't.

ropes are more complex than I ever thought. It helps to learn about your rope & rope maker.

Has anyone ever manufactured a white dynamic rope? I generally assume that white ropes are static.

I have a Mammut rope that is orange, turns into purple at mid point. Awesome rope when it was made in 1975. Pic is from about '77. The rope model made it an easy sell.

Back in the mid 70's MSR used to sell white dynamic ropes. I think they had a colored strand in them also.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
