Camping at Looking Glass

My wife and I are headed to looking Glass for a couple days on Saturday night. We aren't arriving till around midnight on Saturday. What is the camping like? What is the best plan to roll up quick, set up and crash without bothering anyone while they're sleeping. How busy is the camping on weekends? Any places likely to be less crowded than others? I probably don't have anything to worry about but don't want to have a hard time finding a spot.

This time of year its still kinda busy in Pisgah...most weekends most campsites are taken. You can look for pull up sites on most gravel roads like... Avery Creek rd (road the horse stables are on good Mtn biking too), Looking Glass rd (at the parking for the south face or north face has 1 spot and there are many sites north/east of the Nose & North Face parking along the road), or Davidson river rd (past fish hatchery along the rd or along the Daniel Ridge trail are some spots). Best bet is to sleep in a hammock at a spot that others can't pitch a tent...you can find basically any parking spot on the side of any gravel rd in Pisgah and there will be enough trees to hang plenty of hammocks. Enjoy, it should be a good weekend to be on the Glass!

Head to the Nose pullout and park across from the kiosk. Follow the trali maybe 6-10 minutes back. There are a ton of sites that very few people use. Its an old Mtn bike trail. I've only seen people there once in the last three years.

There also a bunch of sites on Cathy's Creek. This is the USFS road that services Cedar Rock. There are also a few sites right at the Cedar Rock parking. There is also the Riding Stables, but I doubt there will be many open spots.

I've always just camped discretely in the parking lot. Get in late, set up your $hit, get up early to go climbing and pack it up.

There are a bunch of spots at the creekbed by the South Face parking lot. Probably 6 or so, most with fire pits. I've never seen them all taken, even on weekends.

You can pretty much camp anywhere once you get up the gravel road. Just be discreet and camp a couple hundred feet from the road.

Seconding Joe's comment. The campsites at the South Face parking lot are spacious, have a reliable water source and have easy access. I also distinctly remember stringing a tarp from the Nose area signposts once, so pretty much anything goes as long as you're quiet.

Careful about the reliable water source... I have seen campers leave their feces right next to the creek. Easily spotted because they don't bury it and there is a mind field of tp. Otherwise, not a bad spot to camp.

For lookin glass with a part of 4-6 people.
