Cleaning inside of shoes

I have some five ten Galileos that I have used for a year straight and have had to resole twice. The insides start to get really slick with sweat after just one climb and this makes it hard for me to stand on the very small holds. Is there anyway to prevent the inside of the shoes from getting so sloppy? Thanks

A buddy has had good luck with some Birkenstock cleaner. He describes it here: mountainproject.com/v/stink…

It's about time for me to try it out. I've always been afraid of gunking up the inside of the shoe with whatever cleaner goes in, but I presume the non-detergent nature of the Birkenstock cleaner might help prevent the slipperiness.

This sounds like exactly what I need! Thanks

Do you wash them?

All you need is warm water and a stiff bristle brush.

I do wash them but nothing seems to work. I've tried warm water already and it doesn't take long until they are slick again.

You really have to brush all the dirt and grime out. And try to brush the dirt off your feet before you put them in your shoe. But if you've had three resoles you might have just taken the shoe past it's peak. Well done.

Use a bit of antifungal powder like Zeasorb everytime you climb in them. That will help prolong the life some and fight the funk.

Solve the problem before it happens: wear socks. You'll look way better(strolling up other peoples' proj in your tube socks), climb way better and be way cooler.
Seriously though, I have climbed in thin COTTON socks for about 20 years of climbing with no apparent decrease in sensitivity or footwork precision. I started climbing in the southeast and ran into the same problem you describe: foot rolling around inside a wet stinky shoe, unable to edge on anything even though the rubber sticks to the rock. I currently wear an unlined shoe (mythos) and a cheap, thin cotton sock. Something about the humidity and material - foot-sock-shoe combination makes the interface stick like glue. Result: no stinky climbing shoes, no shoe scum, no decrease in performance of the shoe. Listen up BD, petzl, 5-ten ya'll need to make us some climbing socks!

Throw them in the wash machine with some bleach and soap. Works like a champ!

Then let'em air dry.

Chalk up your feet! I do it on hard boulder problems and it works great for me! also get smaller shoes..

Problem is accumulated foot crud (skin, oils, bacteria) + sweat =slick. SCRUB them out with warm water, soap or mild detergent (I use 7th Gen), and a medium stiff brush, then rinse thoroughly-3 times. Any soap/detergent residue will contribute to the problem. Dry in sunlight-the UV kills crud (and if they shrink slightly, that counteracts the natural use stretch). Then use rubbing alcohol (soak a rag) frequently to swab out the insides-cleans crud out with no residue. BTW, Matt's advice is good: THIN cotton sock will work well. Thin synthetic fiber sock will amaze you with how much your feet move inside the shoe. Best commercial cleaner out there is Lexol (also does a great conditioner).
