I am from Memphis but am going to be in Chattanooga for most of July and August and was curious how the climbing is during those months. I know it's going to be hot but I want to climb no matter what while I am in town. Are there any places that are better than others for the summer months? Any advice/input is much appreciated.

On another note, if anybody needs someone to climb with during those months I'll be looking for partners. I've been climbing for about 3-4 years and have done mostly sport but more trad recently (would love to find someone who is willing to help me learn more...good belays and beers provided for the service of course) which is one reason I am excited to be coming to chattanooga for a while. PM me if you might be interested.

The best place to climb in the Chattanooga area during summer months is Sunset Park, which is right in the city. It's a west-facing crag, so it's in shade until around 1 p.m. or so, and even after that, you can find nooks that are still shaded. Bear in mind that Sunset is a trad area, so bring your rack.

For sport climbing, Foster Falls (near Jasper, a short drive west of Chattanooga) can be bearable except on the hottest days, and you can cool off in the pond below the falls afterwards. Also, a new sport area called Deep Creek just outside of Chattanooga has enough tree cover to make summer climbing feasible.

Check these areas out in the routes database here and let me know if you have questions.
