Has anyone ever suffered from severe foot and hand contusions? i took a 15' fall a week ago bouldering and missed the pad (obviously)my foot got caught in a crack and according to the doctors nothing is broken but i have several severe foot and right hand contusions. I think it may actually be fractured. i havent been able to walk on the foot for a week now and my right hand is just getting better, cant grip anything yet though.

I fell two years ago bouldering when a hold broke. I was about 15' up as well and while i did land on the pad, there was a rock underneath. I heel land directly on it, bruising the bone. I thought I had broken it but no dice. Just a bone bruise. I took about 3 weeks before I could walk on it normal, which was just enough time to feel good, climb again and the truly break it in a fall. I cant tell you how long it will take to heal as I re-injured mine in the process, but i do know that the bruise and the break felt almost the same. Not much of a difference. Either way its going to just take time. I was still able to climb with my injury if I was careful not to fall where it could hit or land on something. in the mean time work on your core strength. Good luck

If you really think the foot could be fractured, there's no harm in getting a 2nd opinion (and a 2nd X-ray)
As for the contusion healing. A buddy of mine was doing some alpine ice and got nailed in the hand with a football sized rock. Unbelievably nothing was broken. He was still having difficulty generating force on climbing holds two and half months later. He did regain his original grip strength but he was surprised at how long it took.
Good luck w/ the healing,

I've had bruised heel bones/contusions twice on the same foot. The first was when I jumped off a boulder problem (no pad) and landed on a pointy rock just poking up through the ground. The second was a slip about 10' up on the direct start to Calypso. The result of the first injury was crutches and a boot for ~8 weeks. The second injury just required the boot for about 3 weeks. In both cases I did not have any fractures, but most likely munged up the soft tissues in my heel. IMO the best thing to do would be to stay off of that foot for a couple weeks and see if things improve. Only time and staying off the foot as much as possible will speed the healing process. Good luck!

I agree with the second x-ray. im finally happy to hear other climbers stories on their healing times. hopefully in three weeks i can walk too. i have one week down, and its improved but still cant walk. the right hand im hoping to be 100 percent functional by wednesday.

Hopefully my injury wont be as dramatic as yours Count Chockula (btw nice name) but at the same time i feel like it could easily be that way.

The first time I injured my foot, I went about 9 days before I realized something wasn't right. Got a podiatrist recommendation from my doc, they did x-rays and ruled out any fractures, but I definitely had a deep heel contusion/bone bruise. Pod said it would have been better if I had fractured my heel rather than crushing the soft tissue.

At the gym i climb at one of the guys landed in the crease of a matt and had a really bad sprain. It took for ever to heal.

Go to a foot doc again. Stress and hairline fractures don't show up on xrays right away.

Some time sprains are worse that if you would of broke your foot.

Keep it up and keep it iced.

I fractured my 5th metatarsal last week while on an approach hike. I was hiking with a heavy pack and chaco sandals and rolled my ankle. They took xrays at the urgent care center, and on initial inspection there was no fracture. On a whim I called them back 4 or 5 days later, and they said "oh yeah, actually you have a hairline fracture." So definitely follow up if there is any doubt!

Hopefully you got better care than I did. Luckily I was able to borrow an aircast from a friend while I wait for my podiatrist appointment in 2 days. In the meantime I installed some pump rocks to maintain some strength and have also been able to ride my bike.

Hang in there, being injured sucks! Make sure you eat well too to help speed recovery.

Well heres the update.

Three brakes in the hand and arm that the initial doctor told me was contusions (how the hell do you miss that in an xray?)
The foot still has nothing broken but severe contusions..

wont be climbing till late july :(
