I'm going to be purchasing a new rain jacket and was wondering if anyone had any advice/opinions between the two jackets? Will be used in all climates from western desert to the midwest. They both seem like bomb jackets and reasonably priced.

Thanks guys

Bit pricier, but I have hear good things about the OR Helium too.

Check out the First Ascent jackets. I like my BC-100 way more than my PreCip, and I scored it for $25 on and in-store clearance sale. Obviously those deals are rare, but 50% off is common, and that puts their stuff well under Marmot or NF prices ($60-100).

If you want a shell that you won't sweat like a pig in for those climates look for something with eVent. Picked up the Rab Momentum for $150 and while the fabric is a little thin for rough use it breathes so much better than Goretex and teflon knockoffs (I've had plenty of those). In colder temps I've had to layer up with this shell because I don't trap as much heat inside the jacket, even in mountain thunderstorms I need a light layer to keep from chilled.

Oh yeah, Rab for sure if you can swing the $$$. The Momentum is excellent - my partner has one.

I have a PreCip and I've found its main purpose in a rain storm is to keep my warm sweat from mingling with the cold rain. I always take the thing off and am just as wet inside and the jacket is outside. I haven't found a rain shell that works worth a darn during an any elevated activity level like hiking 2-3 mph. In the summer I just wear the appropriate base layers and ride out the storm. I also have a MH Conduit Silk based shell that seems to work pretty well. That is my winter hard shell so I haven't used it for rain.

Beyond its performance at keeping me dry I have no complaints about the Marmot features, cut or durability. And it packs fairly small and is pretty light.

The other option is to carry a couple wind shirts and swap them as they wet out. They do a good job of cutting the wind. The UL backpacking / hiking crowd discusses the trade offs continuously.

The ID eVent Rain Jacket breathes amazingly well and is pretty reasonably priced. The OR Helium is a good deal if weight is a big concern.

Hey my friend.

The Marmot Precip is junk and almost caused me to die from hypothermia last spring. If you were over here, I would give you mine, cause I ain't wearing it ever again....

Cheers from Osaka,
john

Thanks guys, easily convinced me against the precip. Had decent reviews but so many reviews are just weekend hikers and old man dogwalkers not people actually needing good gear. I decided on getting the MHW Epic. Much better reviews and looks like better jacket and snagged it for $68.85 on e-omc with free shipping. Thanks for the advice guys

For anyone who cares (I know the op already bought a jacket) I've tried both and like the NF fabric way better then the Marmot Precip. It feels better on the skin and is more waterproof based on my experience.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
