Anybody know if there's a worthwhile climbing gym in Sioux Falls? I've looked on here and there are threads talking about building one that are a couple years old, any news? I'm looking at a job there and I doubt if I'd be satisfied going to Palisades or Blue Mounds every time I'd want to climb.

I grew up in SF but there isn't enough money in the world to get me to go back. If you do decide to go just quit climbing and take up drinking you'll fit right in. Just kidding. Though drinking was a very popular activity there as I recall. I used to climb at Palisades a lot only went to Blue Mounds once. Palisades in a nice little place with a fair bit of climbing. Even though it's all pretty short but it was a great place to go as a beginner since everything can be top roped. On the plus side you will not be that far away from Devils Tower and the Needles/Rushmore. Both of those areas are well worth the drive. I would go back to the Hills anytime.

Thanks guys, yeah, I really wish the job was on the other side of the state, I'd for sure be busy with the Needles, Rushmore, Spearfish and DT... but alas, it isn't. I've lived in the flatlanded midwest before, so I'd be prepared to put some time in driving. We'll see what happens.

Nice, I've driven past the Tea/Harrisburg exit a million times going to school! I'll let you know if/when I make it to western SD.

I've scrambled at Falls Park in SF! heh Jesse, plan your trip to the Hills asap. It's truly a magical place.

As stated above, there are gyms at both SDSU and USD in Brookings and Vermillion respectively. SDSU is $8 and has generally harder routes, USD is $5 and has more set routes in the 5.9-5.11 range as well as a top out boulder. The wall at Long Lines in Sioux City is larger than the college walls and has a free-standing boulder but is also more expensive, further away, and filled with lots of kids. In Sioux Falls proper (as SPN mentioned) there is free climbing once a week at central baptist which is a fun winter social thing but nothing more, the wall has three ropes and is designed for kids. If you do move to the area give me a PM and I would gladly invite you to climb in my basement bouldering wall, also there is one local with a gym in his barn approx 20 minutes out of town but he only opens the wall from februrary to may or so. As for the outdoor climbing...there are several good routes to be found at Blue Mounds and Palisades, also the intrepid (read: desparate) climber can find some sweet difficult boulders in the minnesota river valley about 2hours from town.

Yeah, I've heard rumors of a church that's got a wall, might have to take a peek at that. Jon, if I do end up moving to SF, I'll for sure have to look you up, perhaps just to pick your brain on building a bouldering wall if nothing else. Thanks again for all the responses!

I am moving, kicking and screaming, from New Mexico to South Dakota. I will be in Brookings on the eastern side. Is there any climbing nearby, and I am willing to drive 1-2 hours. I know the good stuff is in the west, is there anything at all in the east?

Palisades SP in SD and Blue Mound SP across the border in MN. I have not climbed at Palisades, but have at BM. BM is the same rock formation as Devil's Lake -- slick quartzite, and the setting is beautiful. I am sure a Sioux Falls local can be more specific but I figured I'd respond since it's been 3 days. Oh, be prepared to drive 6 hours to the Black Hills. Often.

Same rock type yes, formation no. Sorry, the undergrad degree is kicking in. BM is part of the Sioux formation and pops up in a few locations around that part of the country and the DL rock I forget the formation name, but it is much older. There is your fun fact for the day, and try to enjoy SD as much as you can OP.
