I like lists of peaks, and I thought a crowdsourced list of Utah's 50 best mountains would be a fun, informal goal.

The criteria for "best" is whatever you want it to be: height, difficulty, beauty, location, history, whatever.

Here are my initial thoughts (there were originally 20 listed, plus a few more in the "Others to Consider" section), and as other people add their input, I'll update the list.

List updated 3/4/11

Hands down:
Ensign Peak

Ensign Peak is single-handedly responsible for bringing out the most fattest, most out of shape, most oxygen depleting people in the world. And for one small day, one big moment, man, woman, and child walk or trample among the crust of this great earth.

Best peak ever.

Utah has 50 mountains? Holy shit, they couldn't leave one for Rhode Island?

I want to find some mountain routes with some actual alpine ice/ tricky ridge climbing. I wonder if this next summer, Tristan could tick off the remaining mountains from his list in 1 week? Ok, I'll double it to 2! Challenge Extended!

Some suggestions:

La Sals - S Utah, beautiful mountains with really cool views

Red Castle Peak - Unitas, probably not visited (or seen) by many, but it's a really cool peak, and would have dozens of climbs on it if it were in CO.

Timbertop Mtn - S Utah, in the Kolob canyons in Zion...probably one of the last summits reached in Utah

West Temple - S Utah, in Zion, it's immense and extremely complicated with massive imposing walls and striking ridges.

I second one of the La Sals. Gotta be the best views in UT.

Grand Teton ought to be on that list, that's where all the Utahns I know go to climb mountains ;)

South Ridge of Mt. Superior, best scramble in the Wasatch.

Stoked to see Nebo tops the list! Andrews ridge is by far the best route; long-ish, strenuos, and the final ridge from the south summit to the main summit has some fun exposure. Watch for ice in the south-west couloir early season.

other comparable peaks;
-Mt. Mellinthin LaSals, North ridge is nice
-Mt. Beulah Uintas-would be an excellent challenge in the winter.
-Mt. Olympus
-Kletting Peak, Uintas- beautiful shape

Just a few of my favorites...

Molly's Nipple down by Kanab is a pretty awesome desert "mountain" feature.

Wellsville Cone is really nice. What it lacks in elevation it makes up for in just sheer steepness.

Navajo Mtn. is just barely in Utah, and has to be on the list.

Highest Peak in the Abajos (Blues) should be mentioned, although it is not quite as awesome as Mt. Peale or Mt. Ellen.

Also, though they are not "peaks" really, any of the high plateaus such as Boulder or Thousand Lake Mtn. have amazing views.

Nah, there's a ton of named summits in Zion that were climbed after that.

Good call with Broads Fork Twins, Brian.

I just updated the list to include most of the ones suggested in the thread.

Anyone have suggestions on more peaks in the central Utah ranges? Or the West Desert?

Deseret Peak in the Stansbury, for sure.

Haystack in the Deep Creeks.

Tatow Knob (I know Ben wants this on the list...ha ha!).

Flat Top and Signal.

Frisco.

Split Mountain.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
