Free camping in/around Zion
|
Hey there Dirtbags... I am looking to go to Zion for about a month. Any suggestions for stealth camping in or around the park...Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! |
|
Thanks so much... I will check those sites out. |
|
Read that BLM campground article... is that ranger still patrolling? Anyone out there have any other suggestions? |
|
I didn't climb at zion but I have camped north of town on 18 bluff st. past snow canyon state park good climbing there 2. It is nfs land |

I see you're from CT, so the concept of public land is probably foreign to you. Here's the thing about BLM land...when there is some of it, there is a lot of it, and you can camp anywhere on it that isn't specifically posted "No Camping". Take a look at a map, and/or poke around a little bit around the Hurricane/Virgin/Rockville area and you will find plenty of great places to squat. |

"Mosquito cove" the free camping site that's on BLM got hit pretty hard by the flood waters in December. Not sure the place is suitable for camping just yet. There are some good spots on the Smithsonian Butte road on the other side of the bridge in Rockville. |

I agree with the Smithsonian Butte road, especially if you are a mountain biker. This road eventually takes you up to Gooseberry Mesa.... amazing views, great trail network, pretty quiet and to top it off, big sky with no light pollution... Check it out. |

Ditto on Gooseberry Mesa. It's a bit of a drive to Zion (20ish minutes) because it's all dirt road, but the views are AMAZING, the campsites are great, some of the funnest mountain bike trails ever (imagine riding a bike on a slick rock skate park), and there are pit toilets at the trail head. |

Thanks for all of the input fellow dirtbags. I will be heading out there from mid april until july. Ill be climbing at zion adn the surrounding areas (st george, moab area climbing. etc). If anyone is interested in getting some climbing in, send me an email. |
