Well - I have also just slept in my car in the lot near the upper bridge - not sure they let you do that anymore but I am sure you still could just up the same road a bit further. And this option is cheap! I thought the cabins were only about $40 per night. Am I wrong?
The small cabins are just $44 for double occupancy and six bucks more for a third person. These small cabins are very basic with just a double bed, a bunk bed and a heater, communal showers/baths. On the other hand, they are far more comfy than winter camping.
Yeah, I second the Angel creek campground. Nice and quiet and free. Easy drive into town to have breakfast in the sun by the baseball field, and the public hot pools are right there too.

You can camp at Orvis hot springs for 30 bucks a night but with that price you have 24 hour access to the springs as well as showers ect..
I snagged a decent room at the "Best Western Plus" off kayak for $45/night last time we were there. Not a bad deal since they have a nice hot spring to hit up after some climbing.
I have used Elkhorn Cabins and Townhouses twice now and have been extremely pleased. This is a very cheap option if you have a large group (if not, then this will not help, sorry). During the ice fest, this year, I rented one of the townhouse for a week. It was three stories and fully furnished (beds) for 10 people. I had several more sleep on the floor and it turned out being no more than $20/night/person. These properties are amazing and Mike Jennings (owner) is very helpful.
