Hi everyone

Any opinions about x-Monsters tools, from Grivel ?

I've read very good reviews about them while some people say they're just not worth it.

Ever tried them in the field ?

Cheers,

MIkey

Definitely a solid tool. I got 'em as my first leashless tool for ice and mixed and think it was a great choice. Eventually you'll probably upgrade but then keep them as a thrasher mixed tool.

The only gripe I have is not having that "sinker" sensation that you get with a tubular shaft.

I love the first one I got, the second one in leopard print is a bit too 'C'letter shaped for a friendly grip. (Very agressive) The only gripe I hear is the sharp metal edges if you grab up the shaft somewhere. Definately high performance for half the price of normal tools.

I am considering picking them up as my first tools just because at $100 each (at MEC) they are much cheaper than anything new and most used tools as well. For some reason they cost more in the US.

You should try them somewhere before making the purchase. There is a reason why it's cheap.

I have a pair of X-Monsters, and I love them. The vibration dampeners on the grips and the bendy shaft make them not feel as "harsh" as some of the high-end BD tools. They also have a very snappy swing, because the weight is concentrated at either end of the tool. Overall Grivel has not disappointed me yet. Make sure you tape on the "snake" handle padding that they come with.

I am guessing they are cheap because they are much simpler to manufacture than formed tubular aluminum. It is literally just a flat shaft bolted to a forged head with a plastic handle on it. Doesn't mean it can't perform well.

I went out and bought them and have been happy with the purchase, especially considering that I can buy two X-Monsters and an ice screw for the cost of one Nomic.

I think I saw a picture of a relatively famous alpinist that climbed Cerro Torre with them, so they can't be that bad!

I use them, so therefore I must be somewhat famous.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
