Anyone have info on good places to stay near the climbing in Fontainebleau? I would rather not rent a car so walking distance to the boulder would be great. Thanks!

There are numerous places to stay In Font from cheap motel, hostels to full on 3 story houses you can rent. Many of the Gites are booked up pretty quick so you need to get on making reservations (and pay attention to the seasonal prices,it may switch to a holiday week and you will be paying double)

That being said Fontainebleau is "nearly" impossible without a car or at the very least limiting. It would be like walking from Louisville to Boulder and then to Eldo to visit some of the popular areas, from Elephant to Trois Pignons or to Cuvier and Franchard Cuisinière or Isatis from your housing.
For starters, just to get to Font you would need to take the train to Avon, then it's a mile + to the center of Font which is miles away from the climbing, about 3-4 miles from Bas Cuvier,Apremont,Franchard Gorges,etc... and there is not much in the way of housing in these areas.A majority of the lodging is to the South,Trois Pignons,Larchant and in between.there are a few in around Barbizon.
On top of that just getting groceries or going for food would also be a huge Pain as most of the lodging can also be miles from anything but a bakery.

It may be hard to figure out the site but you want to look in Seine-et-Marne and the local code (postal code for Fontainebleau) is 77 that can help some times.

Also take a look at Bleau.info I believe they have a page devoted to this question as so many folks were asking.

It's been quite a while since I've been there but I have spent a lot time there and happy to answer any questions if you are having problems finding answers.

we stayed at the formula 1 motel in fontainebleau, which was cheap and friendly. we did a bit of cooking on our camp stove in the room and no one seemed to care. after taking the train from paris, we picked up our rental car at the font train station. we had a great time!

Gonna be tough without a car and Taxis are expensive. And Unless your French is solid and your sense of direction, you will have a hell of a time trying to tell your Taxi driver where you want to go.

Find some friends and share a car rental if you can

Rent a car for sure...there are boulders in random spots spread out within about a 45 minute driving radius. We had a great time staying at Maison Bleau (maisonbleau.com I think)! Very reasonable, full kitchen, best english speaking host in the area that knows every little nook & cranny of the area, rent crashpads instead of fly with them, climbing videos in the gites for rest days...the only downfall is that you're 30 minutes from the actual city of Fountaineleau if that's really where you want to stay. But the French countryside is beautiful and you're only a 5 minute drive from Buthiers, which makes it easy to get a second short session in in the evening (and the car vandalism rate is pretty low there). Make sure to climb some circuits...the Jingo Wobbly guide has some great suggestions. Essential Fountainbleau also has the best of each area and is a good little guide to have along too. With all that in hand, my wife and I had the time of our lives a few summers ago!

Oh yeah...check out Neil Hart's (the owner of Maison Bleau) Dose of Font videos on Vimeo. He used to put them out every month but has just been putting out a few videos every now and then lately. Super nice guy!

If you're in Paris, you can get within walking distance to Trois Pignon by train. I agree with everyone else though, we had a rental car and we just slept in it in the parking lot.

Hi,
I opened a hostel, Fontaineblhostel, a couple of months ago: easy bus access from train station, all anemities next door, bouldering areas of Larchant within walking distance (Elephant, Dame Jouanne, Manoury, Simonnet). Esay bus connexion to Buthiers bouldering areas. Crash-pad rental. 10 mn drive from 3-Pignons parkings. Check out first reviews on Tripadvisor (search "fontaineblhostel"). Welcome!!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
