So im thinking about getting a letherman. I've seemed to have lost my trusty pocket knife and Im looking to upgrade. My big question is, what kind of features are best to have in a Letherman??

Thanks

I thought about getting a Skeletool CX last trip but didn't. Very cool looking, longer blade with pliers and has a clip on the end for attachment to your pack, a few other features as well. But heavier, bigger, more expensive, and not as practical for me.

If your worried about saving that extra ounce, as I am sometimes, just go with the Squirt or Micra. Both very durable, light and have it all. I find the scissors are more practical not only in the outdoors (medical tape, badages, etc) but in the real world as well. The squirt has tweezers, both have the bottle/can opener but don't push it, fine for opening up a brew, but for a can of soup or the like, not so much, it may bend. Check out the other features of both on the leatheman site.

Be sure you pack it in your suitcase or it will get snagged at secrituy, I have learned the hard way a couple times.

I carry a Trango Piranha for most all recreational climbing.

I think with light & fast mentality, the Trango is fine & keep the epic'ing to minimum so I can be able to free myself from any rigging problem or make threads for ice anchors.

For the backcountry backpacking & SAR rigging work, I've found the pliers and larger knife with my leatherman useful to cut & free frozen biners/stuck rigging.

the leatherman kick is my go to multitool, but I recently got a skeletool cx, and the bugger kicks ass. its light, keeps its edge, and it is only the bare essentials...including a bottle opener. If you aren't worried about needing more than a pliers, blade, and screwdriver, get a skeletool cx.

+1 for Trango Piranha

Has just what you need for climbing and nothing more - super sharp knife for cutting webbing/cord (or the rope in case you lowered your partner over a cliff and he's starting to pull you off your sugar snow stance), and it has a bottle opener for making peace with said partner after he belly crawls his way back to camp. Super small size trumps any reason you might have for not bringing it - which is the main reason belay knives don't work in the field -and unlike many other belay knives, this sucker can't open while stored on your Oh Shit 'Biner.

Leatherman Juice with a pliers.

Small, but has a pliers, knife, and file.

Trango Piranha on my harness, Leatherman Juice (pliers) if the ability to fiddle with small bolts, screws, etc. is critical to the trip or my safety.

As far as climbing goes I don't have much opinion but when it comes to backpacking a multi tool is just unnecessary. Save the weight and get a small spiderco pocketknife with a 2 inch max blade. Great for cheese, and what else do you need a knife for when backpacking? I guess everybody is different but I've done lots of backpacking short and long trips and a small blade is all I've ever needed.

I like my Skeletool: leatherman.com/product/Skel…

For climbing: The lightest. You really only need the knife. i'd just get a tiny key chain knife or the piranha.

For backpacking/general use: A full sized one. I like my wave because I can get to the tools without opening the body.

For a compromise: The juice

That's exactly what I have! Piranha for climbing, wave for everything else.

smallest and lightest one with a decent knife and pliers

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
