Winter is coming and I needed a new jacket. After much deliberation this jacket seemed like a decent one and was purchased ($200 on sale). Here is my review:
Marmot describes this jacket having "The warmth of a technical insulated garment, combined with the waterproof, breathable performance you’d expect from a hard shell." Living in Minnesota this sounded perfect, waterproof and warm.
Warm it is. So far it hasn't gotten that cold up here in Minnesota but I've worn it (with just a t-shirt under it) in 25 degree weather so far and it was perfectly comfortable. In fact if it's above about 40 and you are doing ANY type of physical activity this jacket is almost to warm.
This is the first jacket I've owned that uses the Marmot MemBrain fabric so I have not had tons of experience with it. I did wear it for about 4 hours in steady rain and never got wet though. I can't attest to the longevity of the waterproofing as I've only had this jacket for about a month but so far it's kept me dry. I'd say this is a more of "don't worry about the rain" instead of a "wear this when it's raining" type of jacket though. For winter time I'm sure this will perform admirably in the snow.
Durability wise this jacket is holding up fine. So far it's mainly been doing work as a belay jacket but I have done a little scrambling with it and the trees/rocks rubbing up against it hasn't affected the jacket. One thing I have noticed is that where I've rubbed it against something very abrasive the water does not bead as well in that area any more. Still waterproof just doesn't bead like the rest of the jacket.
The hood on it is a nice feature (it also is insulated so one's head stays nice and toasty).
The only thing I don't like about this jacket is the zippers. They are the winter-resistant type of zipper. At first it was very hard to zip this jacket up and it's been getting progressively easy as it wears in but I still prefer flaps instead.
I'd say this jacket is a good all-around jacket. It's been working as an excellent belay jacket for the uncertain weather of fall.
