Winter Climbing Near Boulder
|
I am planning on moving to Boulder in a month or so and was wondering when the first snow falls and what the winter climbing conditions are like in the area. Also, any recommendations on living location or any other miscellaneous suggestions to a newcomer would be appreciated. Thanks! |

You can climb many south facing walls all winter in Boulder, provided it is a sunny day. If it is cloudy, everything is cold, but in the sun, you can be very comfortable in January. |

Many spots with South and West facing walls are best when its Winter. We typically get shut down for a spell mid-November to early January, then again in February, then we get into the hellish Spring/Winter rollercoaster with snow/sun/snow/sun/snow/sun which can end in April or last until June. |

You can climb the West Ridge in Eldo almost every month of the year. I recall this past Jan and Feb having more than one day out. And yes Shelf Road is often warm. You can also climb in BC in the winter on sunny days. |

The Cathedral Spires down in the South Platte provide excellent winter climbing, burly cracks and awesome faces all on perfect granite. All the crags are perched up on a ridge, and face south and east, so they soak up the winter sun. |

Highlander crag in Clear Creek is a good crag in the winter on those sunny days. Also Table Mt. can be warm when the sun is out. Plastic might not be your thing but Boulder has some of the best gyms in the country. |

There's plenty of winter climbing near Boulder. Have a look at mountainproject.com/v/color…. Not as much as the Canadian Rockies, though. |
