I'm headed to bishop the first week of november - I know the pleasant valley pit is sorta the climbers campground, but I was hoping for some beta on a more aesthetic campsite nearby? It'd have to be able to accomodate a fairly large group of people and still be close by the climbing... anything like that out there?

Try going to reserveamerica.com. It's the reservation system for campgrounds. You can enter Bishop, CA as your location and the dates of your trip and it will give you a whole list of campgrounds in that area. It's a good starting point to research new areas.

Good luck and have a good trip.

pleasant valley cg (just around corner from the pit) is 10$ per car, not good if you have a bunch of people and cars. lots of free camping round bishop. get the bishop guide and it will have all the info you need for a trip to the bishop area.

Hey sorry to hijack:

RESERVEAMERICA TOOK 50 BUCKS FROM MY CREDIT CARD ON A LONG DISTANCE RESERVATION. BOTTOM LINE: THEY DID NOT RESERVE MY SPOT AT SPRUCES CAMP. THIS IS AN OPEN SLANDER AND THE ONLY REVENGE I HAVE.

I have camped outside Bishop many times on dirt roads going up to the sierras. Its all good for now. Keep it nice up there!

ReserveAmerica is the Ticketmaster of the outdoor world.

Go with the dirt road or river options.

Any fire restrictions in the free camping areas that I should be aware of? I've run into fire restriction issues before, and I'd like to be able to have a fire in the evenings.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
