So…I’m thinking about planning a trip out to Yosemite Valley this winter. I was out there in the summer a few years ago and have been thinking that it would be a great trip in the winter. I know about the ski resort and think some of the trails would be fun to snowshoe or ski.
I’m wondering about other activities in the area. Is there even a chance for rock climbing? Do any of the short falls freeze and offer up any ice climbing? Any winter advice or suggestions would be great. Thanks.
It can be gorgeous, warm weather at the sunny crags in the lower canyon...and it can be dumping rain and snow as well. No way to know in advance...other than checking the forecast a few days in advance.
Here's a shot of a nice warm December 31st a few years ago:
Greg's right. In the early afternoon, the cliffs down valley (Arch Rock, the Cookie) all start getting sun and can be pretty nice. It's mostly just the locals too, so hardly ever crowded. Bouldering can be awesome if they're dry.
Lots of fun XC skiing and snowshoeing to be had too. Glacier Point is a classic. Dewey Point. Fun easy stuff up around Crane Flat. During a good snow year you can easy ski around the Valley, which is a hoot. Such a different and nice vibe compared to the summers.
Alright, So it sounds like winter is a great time to be heading out there. Maybe get in some climbing up at Arch Rock or Cookie. Spend some time snowshoeing or skiing, Anything else I should do while out there?
How are the stores and restaurants in the valley? Is everything open?
Also, How are things up in Tuolumne, does the road stay open back to Lembert Dome?
