Climbing the Chinese Wall in the "BOB"
|
I have a question about some crazy tall limestone in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. There is a place called the Chinese Wall, And its a 12 mile long, 1000 foot high face(for the most part). Is there any info or stories on climbing any of this. I have no idea the quality of the rock but wonder if there are established lines or if this is classified as adventure climbing. Beyond my first question, does anyone want to go for an adventure? |

Beyond my first question, does anyone want to go for an adventure? The escarpment might be 1000' in places, but, the wall itself, looks to be no more than a couple sections of 100' or so at best. There are more impressive features up there to climb that are taller and less broken up. Would be an adventure. Watch out for bears! -Brian in SLC (but from Missoula, first time in the Bob in the late 60's/early 70's) |

Thank you. I half expected that it would just be some wild adventure climbing...I was apparently half right. |

There are log cabins in Bob Marshall Wilderness that have huge, wooden spike grids in the doorways to prevent bears from making their home in there. It is also where they relocate problem bears from other parks. Yikes! |

All that said, I don't want to give the Bob a bad name. it's one of my favorite places on earth. And while I've seen lots of bears there, I have never had any troubles with them. It is their home (one of only a few we've left for them!), after all. |

Did a 20-day leadership expedition in the Bob Marshall a few years ago. The wall seems to have potential for a great many lines if you don't mind putting up with some loose rock and some choss. I definitely spied a few lines that look pretty reasonable. The wall is within a day or two hike from the trailhead if I recall and there are ample opportunities for wilderness camping in beautiful locations near the wall's base. |
