Inspired by pioneering outdoorsman Yvon Chouinard's freewheeling 1968 van trip to Patagonia, South America, a band of bliss-seeking surfer-mountaineers sets out -- in 2007, by boat -- to remake the journey in this adventure documentary. Jeff Johnson and his buddies hug the coast, stopping at the Galapagos Islands and Easter Island before arriving in Patagonia -- a region that's still breathtaking but is now besieged by environmental threats.
The title is actually "180 Degrees South", and it is well worth renting. I just ponied up the $20 and bought it myself. I can't watch it too often, though, because it makes me want to quit my job and start cruising south.
It's a pretty darned cool story and I particularly enjoy the reverence owed to Chouinard's original journey while integrating modern themes and issues.
I was a huge fan of the movie and highly recommend checking it out.
great movie in the tradition of chouinard's "mountain of storms." unfortunately not much climbing except for jeff getting yelled at by timmy oneill for sucking at snow climbing :)
