Well plan to be climbing at the needles in South Dakota and was told there is free camping outside the state park. If anyone knows about this and could tell me how to get to these areas I would appreciate it.
Also if you have info on any other good places to stay near the needles that would be great.
I think i have where im staying by devils tower down but open to other suggestions also
From the Mount Rushmore page on MP: "Wrinkled Rock Free Campground is another (.1 mi) up the road on the right at approx the 1.7 mile mark from the entrance, designated with a sign."
Last year a friend and I stayed in Custer at around $20/night, while other friends stayed here for free. Next time I go I'll be staying for free. It's pretty quiet, there's climbing right there, and it's a good place to find partners during the day. The area is about a ten minute drive to Custer State Park, as I remember it.
Wrinkled Rock has a shitter and is free. The area immediately surrounding the parking area is crap, so walk just a little farther (30 seconds) to find better camping.
I went downhill (east?) and found flat ground and a campfire ring of rocks.
