My AT&T Blackberry doesn't have any bars in our local canyons, but I see other people talking away on their cell phones in Eldo all the time. Why not me?
What's the best company to switch to for coverage while I'm craggin?

Good question.

I have AT&T too, and have to be on call from time to time. When I am on-call I have to stick to the Flat Irons and Table Mountain/Quary area.

BUMP!

I have verizon and get service in most of eldo with no issues. BC not so much, only when I am high up, but don't quote me on that. Don't climb in CCC enough to give an opinion.

I have verizon and while I don't use my phone much while climbing I know it has service in many places in Eldo! I have gotten phone calls on upper peanuts and have service on the west ridge too.

Never climbed in bocan and I think ccc may be kinda spotty someone else will have to chime in on that.

I used to have tmobile and they suck! No service in a lot of places so far verizon has been great.

Triple C seems to be a black-holed no phone zone up past Tunnel 1 until you get to Blackhawk.

I've got AT&T and get a bar or two back by tunnel 6 (creekside and primo area). The c anal zone has got service...

Verizon in general has better cell coverage than other providers.

Verizon is OK from most of the flatirons and a good part of Eldo (not usually right up against walls or at teh base of the Bastille though).
As for Bocan??? Nope... and not up in Ned proper either.

Actually, after many years of rumors about it, a cell tower has finally been built in Ned. They are installing the antennas on it right now. I don't know what carriers, but have heard that AT&T and Verizon will be up there.

Don't know how far it will reach into BC. Probably Sport Park, maybe Castle Rock?

Having had to be on call off and on over the last 2 decades and climbing a bit, Verizon outperforms AT&T by a palpable amount. Verizon is fairly good in Eldo, good at Table, decent in the Flatirons, but iffy in Boulder Canyon. You can lose coverage in some spots on Dinosaur Mt. You can get some reception in upper Dream, near the mouth of the canyon, up around Castle Rock, and occasional coverage high around Upper Security. Occasionally you get some signal at various other crags in BC, but it isn't reliable. In CCC, you get coverage in the mouth area to around Tunnel 1, a bit at the east end of Highlander, and iffy coverage high around Tunnel 6. Now, you get some weird coverage in RMNP. You can get a good signal at the base of the Lower East Face of Long's. You can get off and on coverage at Lumpy. You can get coverage up at Mt. Evans on the Aprons.

Now, in the old days of analog coverage, you could get better reception with static in other places, but they have essentially eliminated that. I recall getting analog signal down on the White Rim Trail and at the Fisher Towers in UT.

Checking into cell service for my daughter, Verizon's main marketing tool around here is their coverage. AT&T, T Mobile lag. It seems there is some decent coverage from Cricket, but it isn't great.

Consumer reports actually rates cell coverage by major city and region, and it is indeed Verison hands down for Denver. But that's not really what you asked...

i have TMobile. probably wouldnt recommend it though.

but a few more areas to mention in CCC i have been able to talk/text from Stumbling Block, Highlander (rare), Doghouse, Creekside (both high and low), Mourning Glory Wall (almost full bars bc you can see I70), Primo areas (including Conspiracy, Convenience, Armory, Crystal, etc).

A climbing partner of mine has an iPhone with AT&T and she had service at Happy Hour crag last week in Boulder Canyon. I have a Verizon Blackberry and I had no service.

You're climbing! You shouldnt be talking on your phone. Anyone worth talking to should be climbing with you

but nick, what if mom calls!?!

anyway, i use sprint, and get a good bit of coverage in eldo.
it also randomly works in nederland, which is another problem spot.
cc canyon, not sure, boulder canyon, random spots...

hope that helps!

How else do you order a post-cragging pizza and get it timed perfectly to your arrival...

I was there last week and had good Edge coverage in some areas and roaming in others. Most spots around 700 are covered.

Saw a guy call for route beta 1/2 way up Hiatus up at lumpy...funny stuff man!!

Rick McL · · Arvada CO · Joined Feb 2009 · Points: 50

My main thing is being able to be "on call" for work and climb in Eldo, so it looks like Verizon is the way to go. But I must say that being able to have a pizza waiting at the car does sound like a good idea.

It doesn't matter if you have any bars with AT&T since they will just drop your call anyway. Verizon has the best sketchy area performance, and I'm pretty sure it has to do with it being a CDSM network instead of GSM in addition to not having a bunch of iPhone users crowding the 3G service. I've placed calls from Lone Eagle Peak halfway up our route on a Verizon phone without a line of sight to any city.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
