Hey there y'all, I recently fractured my tibia and fibula on a fall from bouldering. For the next 6 weeks, I am not able to put more than 15% pressure on it. I was wondering if anyone out there has any advice on how I can continue to maintain some of the strength/endurance I had before the injury. Thanks people, Eric Fullen
Broke my ankle a year ago to the day tomorrow. Not much you can do for the leg, but obviously hand exercisers and hang boards will be critical. My injury was horrible and I was out of it for a while, but after about 10 weeks I started climbing in the gym in my walking cast. Just use an autobelay or go with someone. It actually works better than you might think, and I've seen other people doing something similar with a mountaineering boot on one foot and a rock shoe on the other. Beyond that, riding an exercise bike for cardio works pretty well (as well as getting around on crutches, shit) and you should be able to do plenty of ab and core work once you feel a little better. Sorry it happened, but plenty of other people have been in the same boat at the same time of year. I was climbing by November, and in the last month here I've been on multiple road trips and am climbing as strong as ever. On a slightly more dour side not, even though I injured myself rope climbing, I don't really boulder outside anymore, I can't take the landings, I go to the gym where there are huge cushy pads everywhere.
When I was 35 I broke my femur ice climbing. On the recommendation of a friend I began to swim as part of my recuperation. I found swimming to be highly rewarding, challenging, and stimulating. To this day, I continue to swim regularly as part of my fitness routine. It is a good cardio workout and can help to build upper body strength and mass which is good for those steeper types of climbing.

In a skiing accident, I broke my fibula and broke out a "floating" piece of my tibia about 2 in. long and 3/4 in. wide., then had to have it rebroken and reset. I was on crutches, no weight for 6 months. The biggest problem was muscle atrophy and non stretching ligaments. Lots of miles on the bike, lots of miles hiking, and lots of stretching were what got me back to some semblence of where I was before.
