I'm moving to durham to do law school at Duke. I'm having a super hard time leaving salt lake city due to its amazing climbing. Does anybody know of any good climbing in North Carolina? How far away is it from the research triangle?

There is apparently some fantastic climbing in NC but most of the best spots are not so close to Durham. I just moved to VA and spend most of my time in WV, but I've been looking at Moore's Wall near Winston-Salem. Steep quartzite with wicked exposure. Most of the other stuff is in western NC within weekend driving distance (Linville Gorge for multipitch quartzite, Stone Mountain for granite slabs). Seems like most of the rock is in the mountains in NC. Then of course there is the New but that's getting a bit far from Durham.

The climbing in NC is pretty good, but not as close as you're used to. There is good winter bouldering a little over an hour away (Asheboro). The closest route climbing is north of Winston Salem: Moores wall is spring/summer/fall trad and Pilot has year round toproping and sport. Stone mtn state park has winter slab climbing and bouldering. Ship Rock has good summer trad climbing. THose are the most reasonable day trips. For a weekend, there are many good options: Rumbling Bald (fall/winter/spring bouldering and trad), Linville gorge areas (mostly trad with a little sport and some bouldering), Looking Glass has longer trad climbs, and there is good bouldering around Boone and Blowing Rock. We also make frequent trips to New River Gorge (4.5 hours). I'm sure I'm missing some. The bottom line is that day trips are going to be one-three hours and weekend trips will be longer. You'll be driving more than you are used to, but it is good.

Thanks so much for the advice. The climbing outside of Winston-Salem looks fun. I will be back in Utah for the summers but it is good to know that there is good climbing in NC. What about a climbing gym in Durham? I noticed one but i couldn't tell if it was any good.

You'll love Moore's Wall. Dozens of classics at all grades and some fun bouldering as well. You can be there in less than two hours from Durham. I did day drips from Raleigh and Chapel Hill all the time.

Stone is a lot of fun too if you're into slab, but it's a bit farther away.

There is only one "real" climbing gym in the Triangle and it's the Triangle Rock Club. There is another gym in Durham but it's a joke.

I don't climb inside much but in my opinion the TRC is a wonderful place to climb. Great boulder problems that change all the time and new holds that are always being cleaned. Cool staff, run by real outdoor climbers. To be honest it's the only gym I've ever been to that didn't make me want to puke.

I'll be living in the Triangle from January through the spring and will be looking for a partner to train with indoors and climb with outdoors.

I'll also be in Utah in the fall so I'll send you a PM!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
