Good beginner area at Shelf Road?

Does anybody have any advice on a good true beginner area in Shelf? As easy as possible. 5.8 or less. I want to take my niece and young cousin (8ish) climbing there for a half day. Morning shade would be preferable, too. Thanks.

Chris,

Don't know about shade though.

the Bank Robber area (far left side of the Bank) is pretty good

Not shady though - full sun all day. Some trees to the east provide some respite but not while climbing...

You should go to Rifle and get strong.

Menses Prow has some moderate routes, and it has various aspects so you can chase the shade. The Dark Side is north facing and nice and shady, though the moderate routes on this wall are spread out a bit.

Crynoid Corner is the only fun, easy climb (below 5.8) climb I've done at Shelf... there are several other easy climbs, but the quality of the routes is lacking. Unfortunately, Crynoid Corner is in the sun most of the day.

Actually, Crynoid Corner has morning shade, longer lasting than just about any other moderate on Cactus Cliff. CC is a good spot for beginners - good routes on solid rock and well protected.

Menses Prow has morning shade, especially around California Ethics Pinnacle. All the moderates on the Prow are close together whereas the moderates on Cactus Cliff are fairly spread out. Both walls get real busy so the earlier you get there, the better.

Cactus Cliff has easy routes, but morning sun. Alexi's climb is 5.5 and there are several routes in the 5.7 - 5.8 range.

Wow, thanks 4 the awesome info. I really only need a couple routes so all of the above is useful!
As for the rifle comment, hilarious. I'll mention it to my 8 year old niece who has never climbed before.
