Climbing videos and techno music? Why???

It's been raining pretty much every day here, so I've watched more than my fair share of climbing videos on the interweb here the past few days...

Can anyone enlighten me on why most climbing videos (ugh...bouldering specifically) have THE worst techno music as the background? Do any climbers listen to techno? I've been climbing for a long time and the number of times I have heard techno in the parking lot of a crag...well, that's never happened. Second place is really bad Bay Area gangsta rap. I'm sorry, but Mac Dre and climbing go together like universal health care and the Republican party.

Is there some huge contingent of the climbing community that totally gets down with techno and I'm just not aware of it?

I hear you dude. I personally don't mind the techno most of the time, but I'm not into it and would never listen to it other than in climbing movies. I'm into death metal, metalcore, etc. and although that probably isn't the best genre for climbing vids either, I'd give anything for my climbing gym to stop playing Elton John, James Taylor, or Architecture In Helsinki??? I mean......seriously! Let's get some other tunes.

Here's what I've got in mind...

Go to Europe, but bring some noise-cancelling headphones.

Lots of climber like Electronica/Techno.

Its all because of the first bouldering video released in 1996,
"The Real Thing" bouldering film hit the scene using a techno based soundtrack.
Other directors like Josh Lowell and Mike Call followed in a similar style.
the rest is bouldering video history.

Some climbers find a connection between the rhythmic dancing
of the dance/electronic/techno/rave world,
and the pursuit of difficult movement over rock.

In addition some climbers like to engage in mind altering drugs and experiences,
which can be similar to the experience electronic musicians may be trying to evoke or simulate though their music.

word.

Juno Reactor and Fluke rule!!! Techno is cool, but IMO, it is better for mountain biking than climbing.

Techno sucks, especially if you like music.

I actually just laid this out in this thread on the other site:

I do love techno but I to really answer your question about the vids is I think its great "background music" Typically no lyrics but its upbeat. I don't know, it gets me moving though

Agree, just so many awful rap/techno soundtracks. Why? Where is the rock element anymore? I continue to rock out with Scorpions whenever I am in the gym or if adding some tunes to a home climb vid. So tired of the tech-rap bad sounds. Reason #1 why I skip most repetetive and boring bouldering videos. You just can't get too excited about crawling beneath a slanted boulder that is only 9 ft high for hours on end with bad music.

Holy crap you guys are old.

Another reason Techno/Rap is used a lot is because
the licensing for the music is relatively cheap.

Lots of directors would like to use some bad-ass rock'n'roll
that we've all heard of and we all get psyched for.
But the licensing is very expensive,
and where is the creativity in using music everyone has already heard?

Long live EDM. I love how Americans can delineate a dozen different types of metal (ie. deathmetal, metalcore, etc.) but refer to all electronic music as 'techno.' There is admittedly a lot of bad electronic music out there but just as in other music genres, one has to develop taste. I've never understood most Americans hatred of the genre but it is as it is. Trying to prosthletyze is useless. Instead I'll keep hanging with the Euros. Nothing quite like walking into a seedy Budapest club at 2am with Marcus Schossow on decks...gotta love it.

It's cheap.

It's not usually just techno...it's obscure techno.

It's usually not terribly objectionable. Not all cheap music is techno and small-label hip hop tho, and if the video directors gave the whole thing some more thought there'd be more variety.

Take "The Sharp End" for example. Was there any techno in that production?

Well, to be fair, not ALL 'electronic' music is bad. I find the electronic music in most climbing videos to be bad. The licensing issue brought up above is enlightening though, never thought of that.

I prefer the music here though...

I really like this video by Renan Ozturk, all his videos are very cool. The best part is he doesn't use retarded techno music :)

I am jamming the fuck out right now to Sound Tribe Sector Nine right now, some hard hitting electro-rock, the track called 1103. archive.org/details/sts9200… If you dont like that I really dont know what is wrong with you. Its complex, interesting, and knocks your socks right off.

BWAHAHAHA ... you are both ordered to come clean up my workspace. By zee time I recover from reading zee the first response ... Ben's zinger sent me spiraling over zee edge, launching zee coffee all over everything. Zee computer will never be zee same. Personally, vee are fans of good trance and progressive trance (144 bpm), but some of zee crappy dance music that inevitably ends up in zee climbing movies is beyond comprehension and clearly there for financial reasons.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
