Indoor climbing in Denver

Now that winter is starting to creep in, where are people climbing in Denver during the off-season?

I've given up on Paradise Rock Gym ever re-opening, so I need a new spot. I've tried Thrillseekers, and wasn't impressed.

Suggestions?

Check out "Movement" in Boulder. Better than R&J I think.

That's too bad about Paradise. I loved that place, so family oriented and low key.

I just emailed them a few days ago because I heard rumors that it might open near my house when they were planning on moving :-)

Anyway, they emailed me back

Hi Rick,

Yes, though it has been a long road, we are still at it. We will not post any information/updates, however, until we are able.

Thanks for your communication and interest in the project. Please stay in touch.

Depending on where you are in Denver you might check out The ROCK Climbing Center in Monument, climbingtherock.com. It's a smaller facility but it's not usually crowded and it's not as hard on the wallet as some other places might be. There's also a ClimbFit program that just got started if you're looking to get beat into good climbing shape.

I've been going to Rockin' & Jammin' for several years,, I really like the place. If you can get there before 3 PM weekdays they offer "off-hours" rates which is really nice. Pay less, and the gym isn't as crowded. The Centennial location is taller, so you get to do longer climbs. The Thornton location isn't as tall, but I've always felt more at home there.

Boulder Rock Club has excellent routes, but it's a little pricier than R&J. The clientele can be a little snooty at times, but that seems to be changing. Maybe the crappy economy is making people act nicer?

Good to get some input from other people. R&J is most likely the place i'll end up this winter. But its great to know that Paradise hasn't completely given up yet.

Oh, and Rick, where might this place be that they are allegedly moving to??

I miss paradise. It sure would be nice if a gym would open SW of town or Golden. The rec centers just don't cut it.

As a former employee of RNJ, I can say nothing but good things about the gym. If you are looking to climb routes, you should go there. Quality staff, nice customers, and some strong climbers. Also having two locations is pretty awesome.

Rj has some fantastic setters, and some cool walls. Rj is a great gym.

If you miss paradise, check out the DBC. The DBC is an awesome gym, open 24 hours a day, no birthday parties, and a very laid back atmosphere. The owners are die hard climbers, and invest everything they make from the gym, right back into it.

DBC has everyone(owners, members, visitors) set, so you get a really unique chance to climb on a ton of different styles of rock climbs.

-15 foot tall walls, massive campus board system.
- Nintendo 64, enough said.
- Also the DBC has a little Kitchen area too, which is pretty cool.

Dave Wahl trains at the DBC, and if you want to get strong in the winter, get in contact with Dave ASAP!

All in all, check both gyms out, RnJ has good off hours pricing and maybe 1/2 bouldering nights Mondays and Wednesdays.

DBC just call or email them from denverboulderingclub.com and they will get back to you ASAP.

Best of luck, and I hope this helps

What I heard was somewhere north of Coors field. There are a lot of warehouses in that area. Maybe they lost the property they were looking at, I really don't know anything. I am not a fan of indoor climbing but if was within walking distance to my house you bet I will be a regular.

I was hoping some more information would show up here, anyone know the owners?

I don't understand why getting a decent gym in Denver is such a task?

Thrill Seekers blows. It's dirty and the owners don't want to invest a dime to make it any better.

R&J is decent although their route consistency sucks IMO.

Bouldering is lame. So DBC is pointless.

MKEOWN... Bouldering is lame? Seriously? Different strokes. I don't get to jazzed up about 11d sport climbing, but I am not calling sport climbing pointless.

I have never heard of the DBC before. Might be worth checking out, especially for the 24 hour access. Anyone go there? You like?

From the site: "Added value to build a strong community that supports the most difficult of climbing."

REALLY? Most difficult? Bwhahahahahaha!

Second the thumbs up to RnJ - I have always enjoyed climbing there, and the folks working there were real cool. Also taught my young son to climb much better than me.

thrillseekers is dirty and not great.

rnj (only been to thorton) is great but that much time on i25 is not healthy.

dbc is cool if you're into the boulder scene. i usually keep my shirt on and dont enjoy cheering or being cheered on while climbing. not that support isnt appreciated but how many times can you say, "Yeah!, Get it! You've got it! Yeah! Bro!" 24 access is very enticing, the routes are well set and its a nice space with a good atmosphere but, despite being the only climbing gym within 1/2 hour of me, bouldering just isn't my thing.

i too miss paradise.

"Yeah!, Get it! You've got it! Yeah! Bro!"

cheering happens at the DBC, i approve of this. however the "Bro" happens and we all frown upon that...

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
