Both will screw your liver. So I guess alcohol would have to be my choice. Much more fun and rewarding. Maybe you could drink your pain away. I am still trying.

I try not to take pills since drugs are bad. People these days put too many chemicals into their bodies. So put me down for the smart choice . . . booze! ;P

I have never found pain relief from alcohol. A lot of times it makes it worse (like Sciatica). Don't mix Ibuprofen with alcohol. Marijuana doesn't work on pain. Vicoden is for squares. Morphine, heroine, demerol and diluadid are your best bets for pain relief.

For muscle/cramping/headaches pain-water and an emergen-C(electrolyte powder) are the best. A cup of coffee works well on headaches too. For injuries/sprains/twists etc- 800mg of ibprofen For emotional pain-alcohol For the "holy cow, my femur is sticking out" pain-the strongest stuff I can talk the doctor into giving me.

Neither... For many folks, PAIN appears or disappears based on their partner's performance. ;-)

Alcohol is more fun...but Ibuprofen actively reduces inflammation. So it depends on the pain. Body pain (specifically strains or pulls), ibuprofen. Mental pain, alcohol. Preferably of the 100 proof variety!

Both, together. It'll smoke your liver, but it works.

The only thing I've noticed that lessens pain is Excedrin. Everything else just makes a buzz that only sort of distracts. EDIT: What's going on, Tradster? You doing OK?

Hope it's nothing serious, Tradster. The rare times( I think twice in my life) I've taken a narcotic pain killer, it just made me feel worse; I was vomiting, and still in pain. Luckily, I've never had to undergo any surgeries (knock on wood), except oral surgery, having my impacted wisdom teeth removed about 8 years ago, and all I took for that short period of pain was a couple of doses of Ibuprofen. I didn't even fill my hydrocodone prescription. Hopefully you can find healthy alternatives to relieve whatever pain you're going through. What works for my rare aches, and pains, especially a headache is one tablet of Excedrin (caffeine, aspirin, and tylenol, that's all it is!), and for muscle soreness, I usually take the gel caps (liquid is much more quickly absorbed in the stomach and into the blood stream) of Ibuprofen 600 mg (that's three, over-the-counter 200 mg caps). I wouldn't take the Excedrin very often, as Tylenol is probably one of the worst things for your liver (with the exception of alcohol), and refrain from drinking alcohol with these meds, as it can cause stomach bleeding. I always take it with food, or three tums especially with the Ibuprofen if I don't want to eat. I tend to like when my muscles get sore from climbing, or whatnot; it's a good excuse to see my masseuse for a good, hard massage. We're lucky in Vegas as good massage parlors are plentiful 24/7; especially in China Town, but buyer beware of the happy finish. Personally, I stay away from those places (my male friends tell me where they are), but if you're into that.... Anyway, for stress headaches and emotional pain, I swear by a head massage, and this tool! I'll never forget the first time I had it done to me on our stop-over in Chile, at the Santiago International Airport. The woman ended my wonderful chair massage with that strange-looking tool, and it was so amazing that I asked for 20 more minutes of just the head massage, as it cured my tension headache, and made me relaxed, and tingle all over for the entire rest of the flight home. I have one at home now, but it feels best when a partner does it to you, instead of doing it to yourself. That's with any type of massage, so take turns with your partner, and you guys will be a happy camper, and/or a crack climbers at home.

Yep, we always have a steady a supply of Emergen-C, and coffee.(Most of my headaches when outdoors are due to an electrolyte imbalance, and/or caffeine W/Ds.) The little "5 Hour energy" bottles give me my second wind on all day climbs half-way through the day. When out climbing, or for working out at the gym I fill a 32oz. bottle with water, and add ice to the rim, one powdered grape propel packet, one Emergen-C packet, (it tastes better with this mixture), and a scoop of collagen powder for the hell of it (thanks for the Collagen-C tip after my sprained ankle, Kevin Friesen of MP!).

I mean, Zanax has the directions written right on the bottle, "alcohol may intensify effects", thanks for the info! Nighty night, pain, pain go away...... But then you'll wake up totally rested and still wrecked.....

For an injury, I start with alcohol therapy as soon as possible, followed by some Aleve. Doug Robinson gave me an in-depth explanation once of why Aleve is better than Ibuprofen; he seems to be right - it does work better for me. For just the general pain of life, I take my inspiration from the infamous Dr. Doom: I take nothing. Suffering makes me hard, more of a survivor.

Aleve works well. Once I chewed them up and lined my gums for instant relief... a few minutes later I was feeling fine.
