Climbing near Savannah...

I'm going to be in the Savannah area for work throughout Sept and was wondering if there is anything to climb that is within a day trip of Savannah?

You can get to Rumbling bald in 4.5 hours...it might be bearable there by late Sept. Not sure about n. Georgia

North Ga. has Curahee (small, hot, and probably not worth the drive), Yonah (ok, but mostly easy trad and sport), and Talullah (too hot in Sept.). The closest thing in N.C. would probably Crowders (crowds and its hot), the Bald as already mentioned (too hot and buggy), and the N. Face of Looking Glass. The Glass would probably be your best bet, but you had better like trad and slab. The N. Face is awesome after about 2pm, the sun disappears for the rest of the day. I doubt any of that will be a day trip since you are at least 6 hours round trip from anywhere good. Charleston has a cool climbing tower on James Island County Park. Your best bet is to just enjoy the beach and party it up in Savannah unless you are willing to camp. Pisgah has some of the best camping in the SE.

Thanks for the info. The tower in Charleston looks like the closest thing to climbing and 50ft at that. I'm not against gripping plastic when nothing else is available. Unfortunately my work schedule is going to be such that trips will be limited to less than 24 hours.

If you go to Chucktown, make sure you check out Folly Beach for the surfing and beautiful women. It has a pretty decent night scene, especially in Sept. when the College of Charleston women are back for school.

It's still hot as crap in Savannah in September. Head to the Sunday buffet and Lady and Sons restaurant - you will thank me later.

If you're desperate, there is plenty of bouldering and climbing gyms in Atlanta, but it's still 3 hours away.

Head out to Tybee Island and enjoy the beach.

On a side topic, where is the best BBQ place in the area. And I don't mean tourist crap. I'm talking good locals only places like Two Brothers in Ball Ground ( I grew up in the northern suburbs of Atlanta).

I'm on the med campus for a while and going through withdrawals. Saw this topic on a search for that James island wall. Anyone been there & got tips on the place?

Can someone send me my tools and crampons, for when I freeze some water on it this winter?

Chucktown and Rado -- the only thing they have in common is great beer, which is alot. It's so friggin hot here.
