Issues with backcountrygear.com?

I just wondered if anyone else has ordered something from this company. I ordered just a few small things from them and the transaction has seemed a little slower than usual for online commerce. According to my online banking account activity records my transaction has gone through for the correct ammount. The thing is I just got an email saying they need the CV code from my credit card to get the money from me but I had given it with the initial order and my money went through. Why would they ask for it again? seems a bit sketchy to me. Has anyone had a similar experience?

I would call them directly to confirm receipt of payment.

I haven't had a problem with them. I just ordered a few products from them last week and it took about a day for them to give me a receipt, maybe because they're a small local company? I also had some stuff on back order and they kindly called me and let me know what's up. The rest of my stuff actually shipped out today. If you're having problems with them, I'd suggest giving them a call. They're friendly and I can assure you they won't bite your head off. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys I'll call during their hours tomorrow. I was just making sure I wasn't getting scammed.

BC.com is legit. They've [done] right by me.

This could be overkill, but FYI:

The CV code might not be necessary for processing the charge, but it would be necessary for them to meet their requirement to prove the presence of a card. A magnetic swipe usually satisfies this requirement. If you were dishonest, you could charge back your purchase for any BS reason and they might lose the dispute with the credit card company because they would not be able to prove the card was present. They probably just have an internal check that flags transactions missing the code and that's why you were asked for it later. I handled such disputes in my first job out of college (goodbye cubicle!).

JLP Could you elaborate a bit on your problems? Were they remedied?

I just realized you were referring to backcountryGEAR.com. I have never ordered from them...backcountry.com has always been fine.

It's good you mention this, because I was confusing the two.

I've made at least two orders with them in the last month. Received everything pretty quickly, except for two biners that are on backorder. Their customer service was prompt and helpful. I will buy from them again.

Well it appears the issues have been sorted out but we'll see when my spiffy new tethered nut tool and daisy get here.

I think they are a legit company and have purchase a couple things from them with no serious problems.
They do have a bit of shady practice with out of stock items. I had a similar experience as mentioned above where a good price on an item was advertised so I ordered it. a week later I still had not order confirmation so I e-mailed them. I got a response that it was going out that day. Next day rolls around and still no confirmation from them so I call and find out my purchase was backordered. No big deal, just would have liked to have been notified earlier rather than waiting a week.

BCG is the local gear shop I spend my money at and I've climbed with a number of their employees including their managers. They're great guys and they run an excellent retail store with an inventory catering towards all disciplines of climbing.

I'm sorry to hear that some folks have had problems with their orders in the past, I've bought gear from them multiple times both over the internet and from their retail shop and never had a problem with it. This is the first time I've heard of anybody having major issues with them beyond not being able to return used gear. (but hey, not every store can afford to be REI)

It sounds like if you're planning on ordering something from the clearance section of their website, it might be a good idea to call them and see if it's still in stock...

When I buy gear online I always use mountaingear.com I've been ordering from these guys for many years now and the service is always great. They have some of the best sales too.

Well i generally use Moosejaw, BackCountry or MountainTools pending on the best price of a certain item but none of them had the WC pro key nut tool. Well Back country had it but in back order so I went with these guys. Never again haha.

i'll second Max on this- BackcountryGear has reliable staff and great inventory. I would also call them to check stock on clearance/backorder items. and yeah- opposite end of the spectrum from backcountry.com and its hype/spray/bro-heavy discount children.

I placed an order with one item on backorder with an est ship time of 10-14 days.  I said I'd wait.  3 weeks and 2 days after I placed an order I needed what I could get from my order so I go onto the chat feature of the site and found that they just gave away my cam to someone else and put in on back order backorder too. They proceeded to tell me that they can’t make cams out of thin air. Frustrating customer service although I don’t usually have problems ordering from them. May just stick to backcountry.com instead.

12 years after the OP, this thread finally gets some lovin'!

You should order a Valley Giant and report back with your results.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
