Obscure Knots??

Original Post

I'm currently enrolled in a WFR course and during each class, the instructor calls on a student to present a knot that nobody else knows how to tie. I'm having trouble finding one to demonstrate.

Any resources or advise? Thanks.

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, the knots on these websites are all in the "basic" category.

Except for the Gordian, which would be a bit difficult to teach in the short time frame we have!!

Does it have to be a climbing knot? if "knot" do a google search for Bimini Twist. It's about the strongest loop knot you can tie.

The one-handed method for tying a clove hitch is surprisingly absent from many climbers' repertoires.

any triple looped knot

the in-line 8 is often a stumper

The 2-stranded double rope cluster knot -- but everybody does this one. (with stoppers makes it even better)

Tie something completely fucked up and call it a "sex knot"

The California Lover's knot is the best. Mark, is that what you're talking about?

I think I got it "more generalized" so as to do four loops -- maybe call it the super-love knot

What about the monkey's fist knot? That's one of those obscure Boy Scout-type knots.

Yeah, tell him it's a stupid assignment that wastes everyone's time and doesn't help in real emergencies. Better to know the basics cold than waste time on fluff that merely confuses when the shit hits the fan. Then show them a one-handed bowline while wearing a mitten.

or tie anything with gloves, goggles, & headlamp on

what I would do is bring the Easy Button to class -- nobody would know what to do then.

The Beer Knot! Kinda like an inside out water knot.

Tie a Hangman's knot, then tell him you will put it to use, with him as the test subject, if he doesn't give out more practical assignments. :P

Knots are a good thing to know, but KNOW them well, and when it's appropriate, and the application. One pretty practical knot is a figure of nine knot. Take a figure eight and put another half twist in it, finish tying like figure eight. Unties a little easier after a weighted, and what I read, just as strong as the figure eight.

^^^ that's fluff for sure, The double bowline is stronger (also easier to tie cleanly with out fuss IMO) then a figure 8 if tied properly (yosemite finish with a back up knot is my prefered methoud) and easier to untie. Wouldn't it be more practical to show them how to make a emergency harness out of the rope, along with a munter for those pinch type situations?

The "Boy Scout Knot", if you can't tie a knot, tie ALOT!

The bunny ear knot is the most practical climber knot that almost never gets used....would that be a "Basic" one?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
