Heading to Bishop for a week in March.

Here's my question: I've never done Bishop with an actual rest day -- and i'm planning on two for this trip. I'm bringing my wife and baby, so I'm trying to find something things to do on rest days...maybe some hiking or something like that. Anybody have any good suggestions for off days in Bishop?

Visit the Mountain Light Gallery (Galen Rowell) if you haven't been.

Thanks, Nick. Yeah, I love that gallery and am definitely planning on taking my wife there.

go see the oldest tree in the world on top of the white mtns. you can drive there and its a really short walk. its a forest service site. just ask around in town how to get there.

Hey Jon,

There is lots to do on a 'rest' day.

Lots of good spots to go hiking, such as South Lake, Rock Creek or in the Mammoth area - snow conditions permitting.

Also there are hots springs to visit, and you can go hunting for the Petroglyphs on the volcanic table lands

You probably won't be able to get up to the Bristlecones in March as it's way up there in the Whites. South Lake and Sabrina will be closed too. You're best bet is to stay in the valley, walk around town, or even head 30 miles up rt. 6 to Benton and stay at the hot springs there. Campsites with their own hot tub - you can't beat it. Keough's Hot Springs are fun too if you've never been. the kids love it. $8 a head... or just go feed the ducks at the Bishop City Park.

Might be a mini-Josh nearby.

Last time I was there was for a month long trip. There was plenty to do when we wanted to rest. Mono Lake isn't too far and the sand dunes on the West side of Death Valley is really close as well. And don't forget to hit up the free hot springs. There are two: the Green Church and the one just south of town near the actual pay hot springs. Just head towards the pay hot springs and turn right at the power lines. You should see the pulloffs from there.
