Rope rug designs

I wanted to know if anyone had good patterns for rope rugs besides the regular turk knot. I have made a few patterns but I want to try something a bit different. I have some retired rope that I am going to turn into a rug and then use it as one of the prizes in the HP fund raiser comp.

There are some real cool knots at this site but the only other one that looks suitable for a rug is the masthead...
Sounds like a cool project, post up a pic or two when it's finished :)

I viewed the sites but I think the one knot is to small for what I am thinking of. I was wondering if there was anything like a celtic knot pattern that someone might know of. I want to make something impressive. I made these smaller rugs, but I was hoping to make something a bit larger.

That round design looks great! Do you have a pattern/instructions for that which you can share?

Meg, did you read through the Supertopo thread I linked above?

There was a post by obobogo that tells you where to find different Celtic patterns and where to get help making different rugs.

There was a post by TradisGood that describes exactly what it takes to make a larger more impressive rope rug.

There was a post by del cross that tells a simpler way to make a larger, although simpler rug.

All your questions seem to be answered in that thread.

I read through the majority of the post and I noticed that most of the rugs that were made there looked great, but were based off the turk knot. I did see the large round rug that was made and I have viewed those rugs before, but I really like to weave my rugs when I make them. I must have skipped over the post on where to find the celtic knots though. Thanks for pointing that out. I will go back and be more attentive to reading that section of the post.

As for the pattern that I used to make the smaller round one. I will try and dig it up and post it.

Meg,
I love the two rugs you've made. Are they simply knotted or are they stitched to keep them from unraveling?

Also, if you want a larger rug you are probably going to have to splice the ends of multiple ropes. Now you can have as large a rug as you have ropes to splice together.

Good Luck

Splicing as Strider suggested is a good way to go. It allows the introduction of a contrasting color at the appropriate time. Climbing ropes respond well to just being cut on a bias and using heat to join them.

Sorry for not responding sooner, but I think this covers the majority of the questions.

In comment to craig512: I checked out the site you linked to and although the decorative knots were not suitable for rug making, the monkey fist knot looked great for making a dog toy so here is a pic of the result.

In response to Strider: Thanks for the Guild of Knot Tyers link. This will be wonderfully helpful.

As for trying to post the small rug pattern: I still need to find it, as soon as I get it I will post it.

In response to Robert 560: The rug is simply a knot. The weave is tight enough on those two rugs that you don't really need to stitch them. The rugs are pretty durable. I've utilized mine for a while now and it takes the wear well.

Does anyone think that the dog toy idea would be a good comp prize for the Hidden Peak comp fundraiser

So I decided on a celtic knot that I found at this site:

you might find a lot of pertinent and interesting info by doing a google search on the phrase "marlinspike seamanship"

I asked and because my friend is using it as a source of income she doesn't want to give out the pattern but will weave your rope for you, and for a pretty reasonable price considering the quality you get. You can get to her website using this link: FaunCraft
Most places weave your rope for $40 or more, plus shipping and they come out looking kind of sloppy like at this website: roperugs.com/Rugs.html

Get the sweet pattern pictured below for $45 plus shipping. They will even give you $10 back if you wash your own rope!
Even if you don't have a rope to retire, from time to time my friend sells completed ropes on the website.
If there are no completed ropes posted you can email to inquire about what is available. Here is the website: FaunCraft

These are all awesome, I'd be psyched to win one! I'd be interested in learning how to weave them as well, but understand if you're not interested in sharing. Keep it up!

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
