Any recommendations for good camping near mount lemmon? I will be there for a week with two couples so places where two tents (spaced far apart ;) ) and a car could fit.
Thanks for your help!!

I left Mt. Lemmon after the fire of 2003, but I had a camp set up off of Mount Lemmon highway on a dirt road(8500') that went past the fire station just before were you turn to go up to Ski Valley. This dirt road was on National Forrest land, and was free camping. All of the campsites closed around the first of October on top of the mountain. I haven't been back so I'm sure everything has changed. I hear that a campground has popped up around the old prison camp(5500'), recently renamed George something or another. That would get you closer to the prime climbing, and keep you a little warmer. I used to encounter numerous rattlesnakes around that particular area(old prison camp).

Depending on the time of year:

Mt Bigelow (~7500-8000')loop road has dozens of campsites. These are primitive and walk-in, but great sites. No fee, no reservations. (Ideal for climbing upper mountain, Summit Crags, Druid, etc.)

Showers Point (~7500') is a group campground you can make reservations. (Ideal for climbing upper mountain, Summit Crags, Druid, etc.)

Rose Canyon Lake (~7000') is a nice area with dozens of paid campsites and more developed facilities, where you can make reservations. Definitely the most developed camping on the mountain as far as facilities, if you care. Also, more crowds, so it's a trade-off. (Convenient to Munchkinland, Troll Wall, Willow Canyon, etc)

All the above areas will be pretty cold at night due to high elevation.

Prison Camp (~5000'), mentioned above, is now called Gordon Hirabayashi. There is no 'established campsites', but you can camp there free.

Lower down is the General Hitchcock campground (~4500), and finally the Bear Canyon campgrounds, both good options and significantly warmer and more sheltered than any of the above.

There are also dozens of dirt roads all over the mountain where good camping can be found. I'm not going to divulge my favorites, but with a little looking around in the daylight, you should find plenty of options.

Hope that helps.

If you want to be higher up on the mtn, check out incinerator ridge road, on the northeast side of the road (to the right as you're driving up) just a bit before mt bigelow, or mt bigelow rd itself. They both have plenty of real nice non-official sites that should be mostly empty this time of year.

Once you get below windy pt, it can be hard to find much in the way of non-developed camping but if you don't mind paying a few bucks, Molino Basin is decent, and as James mentioned Gordon Hirabayashi is free, tho not terribly private.

Hope that's useful!
