A friend from Italy plans to visit the Tetons in February. He's asked me if there are guidebooks for backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering covering the area. Any recommendations on the guidebooks and other resources? Thanks!

A great place to start is the following blog... This a blog from a local, and very active, ski mountaineer.

tetonat.com

A quick overview of BC skiing in the area...

  • Lots of backcountry can be accessed from the JH ski area.
  • Teton Pass has great BC skiing and equally large crowds
  • The main Teton Range has, obviously, a lifetime of ski mountaineering. The most commonly skied areas are on the flanks of Albright peak and include three runs called "25 Short", "Mavericks", and "Whimpys". These are accessed from the Death Canyon trailhead.

Tell him not to discount Jackson Hole. There is some epic, lift accessible backcountry terrain there, with short hikes, out by Four Shadows. And tell him to make sure that he has a beacon, probe, shovel, and competent partners. The conditions out there are no joke.

Can't recommend a particular guidebook, but I was just in Jackson last weekend and was impressed with Teton Mountaineering's guidebook selection. They're right near the downtown square, near Anvil Motel. I recall seeing many BC ski/ski mountaineering guidebooks there, and the staff (Matt) was really helpful. Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions! One more thing: What is your favorite map of that area?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
