City of Rocks' best campsite?

Headed there next week and as the sites are expensive and reservable, what's the best one? Is it best to stay at the lower elevation sites this time of year? Can you alter your reservation without taking it in the shorts?

I've always felt site 46 and then 47 were the best sites. Those down by Flaming Rock trail head look nice too, though not as private because of the trail head. They are pretty cool at the park office (on the way into Almo) about changing reservations if something is open. When we were there before Labor day, it was very dry with no campfires allowed and the nights were not yet cold... Have fun.

Have you used the online reservation system?

idpr.camis.com/viewer.aspx

Put in your dates etc. and select City of Rocks. You'll get maps showing availability of each campsite by color code. If you're there mid-week you may not need a reservation, so you can choose when you arrive. Just realize that sites may empty when you get there but be reserved for any combo of days in the future. They'll have a tag showing which days.

Favorite sites include 62 or 61 (can be windy), most any of 46-53, 36-38. 37 gets good sun. There are too many in area 3 to remember.

Straight from the Horses Mouth:

Charles, My apologies for the delayed reply. I was on annual leave all last week. The best secluded sites in area 3 are 14, 18, 19, 20, 22 - but 14 is on theroad. 18 and 19 are tucked back into the rocks, even though the parking isnear the road. Best secluded site in Area 4 is 36. You did not say whatkind of camping unit you were in, so not sure what will accommodate. Ifyou are OK with walk-ins you can really get secluded in sites 59 and 60. Ilike 59 best, but its a walk. Hope this helps.

Reservations are the best way to go by far. There are now two hot springs locations and showers at the almo general store and at the ball park in Oakley. Wood is $3.00 per bundle (self serve) in Almo. You can find a complete layout of campsites on the reservation site. There is also a new quick type mart in Almo for beer and sandwiches. Any extensive services is in Burley.

Have fun at the City.

Thanks, I had already reserved #58, but there's still most sites available. Good info. from the ranger.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
